it seems like everyone is sad. here's a speech i made for english, cheer up everyone.
‘Those who smile when no one is around, mean it’ Snow White.
Have you ever seen the city at night when all the streetlights are bright and yellow? Or have you seen a newborn just laugh for no apparent reason? How their eyes glint. Or have you ever seen an elderly couple on a park bench, too tired to speak, but still obviously in love? What do all of these things have in common you may ask? Well, for most of us, they have the tendency to make us smile.
You smile when someone walks a senior across the street, or holds their door open. It makes you that much less cynical.
You may ask ‘what makes a smile’, well, genuine smiles are generated by the unconscious brain, so are therefore automatic. When people feel pleasure, signals pass through the part of the brain that processes emotion. As well as making the mouth muscles move, the muscles that raise the cheeks - the orbicularis oculi and the pars orbitalis - also contract, making the eyes crease up, and the eyebrows dip slightly.
Fake smiles, on the other hand, can be performed at will, because the brain signals that create them come from the conscious part of the brain and prompt the zygomaticus major muscles in the cheeks to contract. These are the muscles that pull the corners of the mouth outwards.
Now that you know what a genuine and fake smile are composed of, what makes you smile?
I smile when a song favorite of my younger years comes on the radio, and I remember all of the good times that me and my buddies spent playing hide and seek in Ricky’s basement, playing monopoly in Craig’s garage, and having water balloon fights in Chris’s backyard.
‘I get the greatest satisfaction at smiling at a grumpy stranger. All of a sudden they aren’t so grumpy’ Kevin M. Kavanaugh.
When they tell you that smiles are contagious, they aren’t lying. A test was taken in Ontario on May of 2002 in the study of people’s ability to react to others emotions. They gave 15 people 3 photographs each, all the same photos. One was a woman smiling, one was a child crying, and the final one was an actor, quite clearly playing a role, but crying. All 15 of the subjects found it quite easy to smile while studying the photograph of the smiling woman, but difficult with the crying child, along with the actor’s photo. Even though the subjects knew that the actor was acting, they said it was tough to smile with someone who wasn’t smiling back at them.
Did you know that the first reaction to nervousness is to smile? I get really nervous at funerals…
And did you know that ‘smile’ is an anagram for miles, limes, and slime?
The album ‘Smile’ by the beach boys, spelt with a lower case ‘i’ is the one of the most celebrated unreleased albums of all time.
The Avon brand of cologne is called ‘smile’.
Did you know that I hate needle, and when I saw Saw 2, I wasn’t smiling?
Happiness starts with a smile. Smile when you’re sad, or when others are sad, and ‘try not to frown, because you never know who’s falling in love with your smile’ Al Capone.
Do something to make you smile- see a friend and reminisce about the time that you two snuck out and biked to McDonalds, only to find out that their doors were locked, and the jerk at the window refused to serve pedestrians through the drive-through.
Do something nice for somebody that you don’t know.
Do community hours, help someone in need, buy a homeless person a lunch, or make him or her a sandwich. But don’t give them money, you don’t know what they want it for.
Has anyone noticed that when you’re smiling you feel as if you’re invincible? You wonder, ‘how could I have been so sad’, that’s because smiling releases a chemical reaction in the brain, producing endorphins, much like anti-depressants, which stabilize the endorphins. When this happens, you notice the good things, not the teenage angst things that those girls in the back of the science class talk about.
You notice the kids in less than poor countries smiling. The kid whose country is under attack is showing a peace sign. The victim’s parents forgiving the killer, the killer cries. It’s like there’s still some good in the world you know? And through the drug wars, gun violence, domestic violence and all that other crap, you know that there will be peace.
’Peace begins with a smile’ mother Theresa.
I’ve said smile 28 times in the past few minutes, well, 29 now. I guess all I want you to do is be happy, whether your girlfriend or boyfriend just broke up with you, you got ketchup on your shirt, you’ve got a giant zit, you were beat up, tripped in the hall what have you, it’s not worth not smiling over.
So smile, because there’s a chance that tomorrow might just be worse.
