"Social workers understand that people's problems--poverty, substance abuse, mental illness, and so on--are often a function of cultural, social, and environmental forces" (Reamer, 2009).
Everything is just a function of where we are in tie. If we're at the right place at the right time, then the right thing will happen. Coincidence? Maybe. But I like to believe that there's a higher force in play who's directing all of our lives to be the certain way that they are.
That's why I think it's sad when people think of themselve as better than others, me included. Honestly it's just that I was given the opportunity. I was placed in the right family. I was born in the right time period. I was living in the right house in the right school district to go to the right school which fostered my search for college. None of this had to do with me. These are all cultural, social, and environmental factors that helped shape me to where I am today. They've helped me to receive the opportunities I have and they've helped me to become the type of person who can do the things that I can do.
If I were to be born to a family in poverty. If I had gone to a terrible school. If I hadn't had an okay home life. If I hadn't had teachers who pushed me to succeed, I would be no better off than the beggar on the street.
Maybe that's why I envision myself as a beggar sometimes. I realize that we are the same. We could be the same. We could be in each others' shoes. But really it comes down to the opportunities we're given that are out of our control.
I am no better than you. You are no better than me. We are all equal. We are all one.
