Before I Have the Time to Change My Mind [Coat West/ChocoMimi cast: Nagi/Teramoto Yukika]

Oct 04, 2010 17:15

I can't believe I finally finished this. Seriously, I thought it would never happen. I started it back in March of 2008. MARCH OF 2008 omg.

Firstly I want to explain that I started writing this as a reaction to nica1287's Coat West fic here. I got all hung up on "BUT WHAT ABOUT NAGI T_T" and wouldn't shut up about it, so I decided to pair him up with the most unlikely person I could think of, which turned out to be Teramoto Yukika, who played Choco in ChocoMimi. (Remember that in March of 2008 ChocoMimi hadn't finished airing yet.) The more I thought about it the more I liked it, which led to a conversation that went something like this:

xxlithiumflower I wanna write a fic about them. TELL ME IT'S A BAD IDEA. TALK ME OUT OF IT.
nica1287 I think Nagi's a jdrama fan. Do you think he watches ChocoMimi? I wonder if they do ChocoMimi promo events...
xxlithiumflower WHAT ARE YOU DOING. THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I ASKED YOU TO DO.

So you see it's all nica1287's fault or something. =D Come on, a gay porn star and a teenage actress, obviously it's a match made in heaven! THERE MAY BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME...

Title from the Gary Puckett song Young Girl (you may remember it from Glee!) because the lyrics in their entirity fit quite nicely imho.

Title: Before I Have the Time to Change My Mind
Pairing: Nagi (Coat West)/Teramoto Yukika (Choco from ChocoMimi)
Rating: PG
Wordcount: ~1600
Summary: Nagi is totally not at the mall because of the ChocoMimi event that happens to be taking place there, just like Yukika is totally not hitting on him. Yukika thinks Nagi's a terrible liar and denial is so not his colour, but he seems like a nice guy so she'll let it slide.
Notes: Set in March of 2008 when I started writing it, meaning ChocoMimi is nearly done airing and Yukika is 15. Knowledge of ChocoMimi is not necessary but probably helpful, and a cursory knowledge of Coat West will help my dumb jokes make some sense.
Dedication: For instigator nica1287, of course. ♥

Before I Have the Time to Change My Mind

Nagi needed a new pair of jeans. That was why he happened to find himself at the mall on the day the main cast of ChocoMimi were there for an event; this was completely unrelated to his reasons for being there. It wasn't as if he happened to find himself watching ChocoMimi every week and enjoying it or anything. No, it was nothing like that.

At least not if anyone happened to ask.

And he just needed somewhere to stand while he drank his latte. It was a complete coincidence that the location of the pillar he chose to lean against gave him a great view of the small stage where Teramoto Yukika and Masuyama Kayano were singing Happy Happy. So what if the song was catchy and they were adorable? Completely unrelated.

And of course it was completely coincidental that he found himself working his way toward the table where they were all signing autographs afterward. There just happened to be a trashcan nearby, that was all. And it wasn't as if he'd be able to swallow his pride long enough to get an autograph anyway. Not that he wanted one or anything.

Dropping his styrofoam cup into the trash with a tired sigh, Nagi glanced sidelong at the brightly decorated table and did a doubletake. Even ignoring any knowledge of ChocoMimi he might or might not have, it was fairly obvious that someone was missing. Things started to pull themselves together when he felt something light hit his foot.

After retrieving the pen, Nagi looked around discreetly until he caught a flash of pink behind a large potted plant. He approached with caution and an amused smile. "This what you're looking for?"

Teramoto Yukika smiled with embarrassment and accepted the pen with a grateful little nod. "Are they still at it over there?" She tilted her head in the direction of the table though the plant she was hidden behind obscured it.

Nagi settled back on his heels and glanced over, his own view unobscured. Kido and Miura appeared to be having a rather heated disagreement; Usui was tugging at Kido's sleeve and looking quite concerned. Kayano was yelling at them all and Ayame had managed to fall asleep with her head on the table.

"Wow," he remarked, smiling wryly, "I can see why you'd want to hurry back to that."

Yukika groaned, pulling a large leaf down to cover most of her face and pouting.

Nagi's smile turned sympathetic, and, considering, made a snap judgement. "You know, I think you could use a break," he decided, pushing himself to his feet. "By the way, I'm Nagi."

"Just 'Nagi'?" Yukika asked a short while later as they sat on a bench outside the mall; she was hidden behind a ballcap and sunglasses for fear of unwanted recognition, but her eyes sparkled pleasantly as she enjoyed the ice cream cone Nagi had thought might relieve some of her unwanted stress. (As she licked away at the melting vanilla ice cream Nagi told himself quite sternly that she did not remind him of Hikaru at all, not even a little, because that would be too many kinds of not right for him to handle.) "Just 'Nagi'? Like just 'Cher'?"

Nagi laughed. "Okay, something like that."

"Or just 'Madonna'?" Yukika continued. "Just 'Yamapi'?"

"Wait, one of these things is not like the other," Nagi remarked, smiling.

"I think it's a cool name," Yukika declared, kicking her feet. "Maybe I should go by just 'Yukika'." She frowned. "Doesn't have the same kick, does it?"

Nagi thought it was awfully cute, but said nothing and continued smiling.

"So is this a date?" she asked, and it took Nagi a few minutes to stop choking on a mouthful of Fanta that had found its way into his lungs long enough to respond.

"A date?!" he spluttered, eyes still watering. "First, I all but kidnapped you from a publicity event."

"You didn't kidnap me, you rescued me," Yukika clarified, licking melted ice cream from her fingers but keeping her eyes on Nagi (who was still most certainly not reminded of Hikaru). "You know, knight in shining armor stuff! I was about ready to deck Kaya-chan, I swear. Bad for publicity."

"Secondly," Nagi continued emphatically, ignoring her enlightening clarification, "you're a kid. That'd be creepy."

"I'm fifteen!" Yukika objected.

"Exactly!"

Yukika pouted. "Jeez, I was just asking. No need to get all defensive. Do you have a girlfriend or something, is that it?"

Nagi stifled an impulsive laugh. "That's... not exactly it, no," he replied evasively.

"Boyfriend?" Yukika tried.

Nagi replied similarly. "Why does it matter?"

Yukika kicked at the air, once, hard, and frowned. "I don't know, because if I stop talking I don't have any reason not to go back except my own stubbornness, unless this is a date but you already said it isn't and I'd like to know why. Other than what you've already said, that doesn't count!" she added quickly.

Nagi considered. She was starting to seem honestly distressed and was at least being honest about it, so he felt he owed her the best answer he could give. "We're... different types of people, I guess," he said finally. "Hard to explain. Does that make sense?"

"Not even a little!" Yukika glared over her sunglasses. "You just met me, how do you know we're so different?"

Nagi rolled his eyes. "Call it a hunch? It's not a matter of knowing you; I know me. Trust me on this?"

"Well I won't push it if you're going to get all existential on me," Yukika snorted, "but you know I'm not actually Choco, don't you? And come on, it's not like you make a living do gay porn or something, right?"

This time when Nagi was done choking long enough to breathe and Yukika was sure he'd been thumped on the back enough times to prevent any lasting harm (Nagi was having trouble seeing her logic) he held up his Fanta and said, "Okay, this can? When I'm drinking from it? Don't say things that might make me die."

"Sorry, sorry!" Yukika stifled a giggle behind one hand. "I didn't mean anything by it! But you've got the looks for it, at least!"

"I- Did you just make a pass at me?" Nagi was fairly sure he'd just felt a few braincells kill themselves in protest and take part of his soul with them. "Tell me you did not just make a pass at me."

"No, of course not," Yukika said solemnly, eyes sparkling. "Just like you don't watch ChocoMimi and don't enjoy it and don't have Happy Happy stuck in your head right now, right?"

Unable to stop himself, Nagi laughed. "It's not nice to read other people's minds without their permission, you know."

"Can't blame me when it may as well be written across your shirt," Yukika replied with a smug little smile before popping the last bite of her ice cream cone into her mouth. "That was good, thanks again."

"Don't mention it, a little ice cream goes a long way."

Yukika smiled awkwardly, turning away but still watching Nagi from the corner of her eye. "And thanks for the company. And the rescue," she added quickly.

Nagi nodded, smiling back. "Any time."

"Really?" Yukika cringed, biting her lip when she realized how quickly she'd spoken.

Nagi hesitated. "How do you mean?"

"No, nothing, never mind," Yukika corrected, her sudden sunny, unconcerned smile very nearly convincing. "I was just, y'know, saying words for no reason."

"Because yeah, uh huh, I totally believe that," Nagi replied sarcastically. Reasoning that he was probably already going to hell anyway (and it wouldn't hurt to get himself a spot in the express lane; he didn't like to wait in line), he repeated, "Any time." He held out one hand expectantly. "Come on. Cellphone. Cough it up." When she surrendered it obediently he entered his own number into her contact list and returned it.

"Any time?" Yukika said hopefully, the sparkle in her eye betraying her smile as an authentic one. "Really?"

Beginning to feel a bit like a broken record, Nagi just nodded in reply. "You know, I think it's time to get you back to your promo event before the staff members totally freak out- come on, don't laugh! Besides, that fight must be over by now."

"That, or I'm missing an awesome fist fight," Yukika agreed, looking suddenly very amused.

"All the more reason to head back, huh?" Nagi remarked. When they were back inside (and found no fist fights in sight, much to Yukika's disappointment) he reminded her, "Totally call me some time, okay? I wasn't joking. I'm a good listener, you know."

"I will," Yukika promised with a quick, grateful little nod and, with a show of reluctance and a sincere sigh, dashed back to her abandoned station.

Nagi turned to leave but only got a few steps away before being halted by his ringtone. He pulled his cellphone from his pocket. "Hello?"

"You said to call you," Yukika's voice explained in greeting.

"I did," Nagi agreed, turning back and waving quickly to her from across the room.

"A- anyway, I guess I just wanted to say hi."

Nagi smiled. "Okay. So say it."

Despite the distance, he was fairly sure he saw her smile too.

"Hi."
