aaaaaahahahahaha I love ROOKIES so much and this is irrefutable proof that the drama left out inconsequential things that still make the manga more than worth reading. CONTEXT IS FOR THE WEAK. (But yeah, it makes sense in context.)
Between ROOKIES and Slam Dunk, I seriously want to find every person who read Weekly Shonen Jump in the '90s and punch them in the face because I am so jealous and they probably took it for granted. Can you imagine the person I would be today if I had grown up reading Weekly Jump? I WOULD PROBABLY BE A GO-ONGER OR SOMETHING. I WOULD BE SO FRIGGING AWESOME. Ahhhgh... hrmph.
Does anyone remember Andrew W.K.? He did that song She Is Beautiful, which goes
something like this. ("I wish i could live like Andrew W.K. Just rocking out and occasionally making a smoothie.") Anyway while I was looking for the Kiseki PV on YouTube, I discovered Mr. W.K. actually
did a cover of it, in English - and much to my bemusement, it's actually pretty good. Turns out he did
an entire cover album of Japanese songs, including MONGOL800's Chiisana Koi no Uta (which was used in Yamapi's drama Proposal Daisakusen) and THE BLUE HEARTS' Linda Linda (which is fucking awesome omg). He also did - wait, you might want to sit down for this - an entire album of Gundam song covers, including
Tobe! Gundam!, the original Mobile Suit Gundam theme song.
(ftr the best cover of Linda Linda is from
Linda Linda Linda; so cool they had Bae Doona and Kashii Yuu sing it. That's right, the star of Korea's highest grossing film, and the wife of a Kamen Rider. So awesome the coolest scene of Haruhi Suzumiya played it out almost shot-for-shot!)
But speaking of awesome things and music and THE BLUE HEARTS and my totally pale aspirations, I have
two songs up on AnimeLyrics.com. (My aspiration in this case is to drag them up to a higher standard of quality by adding quality translations! Shut up, it could so work.) Because who but me is going to translate Japanese punk songs from 1987? DAREKA NO RURU WA IRANAI~
