HEY, HEY GUYS. DO YOU KNOW WHAT'S REALLY AWESOME? I'LL TELL YOU WHAT'S REALLY AWESOME: THE SHINSENGUMI PEACE MAKER DRAMA.
OH MAN. SO GOOD. I was actually so excited for the first episode after I watched the SP I couldn't sit still so I put on my coat and ran a couple laps around the residence block. That's, uh, a fair distance. The fun part was when I crouched down in the snow, coughed terribly, and spat out blood. I was like, "...NO, NO LIFE IMITATING ART, SO NOT COOL." (The wheeze-coughing opened a partly-healed cut in my mouth, don't worry.) AW MAN I'm still so flaily over it I could totally run another couple of laps. Except for the part where even breathing in too quickly reduces me to a coughing, wheezing mess. Exercise and I, we do not get along. *doubles over, hacks* Coughing so hard I see stars, wow, haven't done that in a while...
SO. SHINSENGUMI PEACE MAKER. KIND OF REALLY FRIGGIN' AWESOME. To illustrate this, a list of its shortcomings (and the stuff that covers for them!):
1. Dumb unconvincing CG fire. (Suga Kenta's acting really sells it, though.)
2. Apparently Furukawa Yuuta thinks "perpetually panicked and concerned" and "was just forcefed an entire lemon" require the same facial expression. (Whatever, he's hot, and he does the pathetically whiny thing surprisingly well.)
AND THAT'S ABOUT IT, REALLY. Stuff I expected to fail did not, such as the cast which was uniformly AWESOME. There's so many I want to give specific mention to, but I'll do my best to narrow it down.
Okay, the scene where there's a fire and Tetsu has his traumatic flashback? My heart was totally breaking for him, but I couldn't help but think, "No way they're gonna pull off the part where Yoshida's eyes are beyond terrifying, I mean IT'S ARAKI. HE'S INUI. Come on. So disappointing."
HOLY HELL ARAKI IS FUCKING TERRIFYING. All shrunk down like that you don't really get the full effect, but trust me on this one, he'll be haunting my nightmares along with Cesare.
And the one character I was seriously skeptical about was Yamanami. I mean, Kamiyama Ryuji! Air Gear Romeo! Surely he couldn't...
Okay he is a goddamn chameleon or shapeshifter or something, this is ridiculous, he makes the rest of them look like lazy cosplayers or something. *throws hands in the air*
AND. AND SUZU. (Bear with me, I can't not mention Suzu.) He had, what, one line? He basically stood in the background for a scene or two. BUT HE IS SO PERFECT. Nomura Shuuhei is totally on the fast track to being one of my favourites. ♥ *WIBBLES*
On a different note, you know what my favourite part of the SP (basically a 'making of') was? That it showed how much the entire cast seems to adore Suga. The clips of filming were all from December, so of course everyone's freezing their butts off, but every time the director yells "Cut!" everyone instantly runs over to Suga to wrap him up in blankets and hug him and rub his arms to help warm him up. AWWWWW. And just when I thought it couldn't get cuter, they cut to Furukawa off to the side, saying, "He's gotten to be like a real little brother to me. When he says Tatsu-nii! my heart goes *kyun!*" Oh my goodness that is just too cute for words. *w*
And my other other favourite part about everything was when they did a brief intro clip for the band that does the ED, +Plus. I was like, "Wow, this song is pretty catchy. They're pretty good! Good looking, too. Huh, the bassist looks like Kotani Yoshikazu." Pause. "Oh, the bassist is Kotani Yoshikazu." Well then. The more you know.
I want to just keep rambling on and on about all the good stuff about it (my god, the music, you do not know the restraint I am showing here) but I... I just wanted to share the good news, I guess. Save for a little bit of shaky camerawork and the odd questionable fight scene SFX it's basically SPECTACULAR, so. Yes. I don't really know what I'm getting at. IT'S MY LJ AND I'LL RAMBLE OBSESSIVELY IF I WANT TO, I guess.
