*finishes watching Sailor Fuku to Kikanjuu*
*IS SAD FOREVER* ;________;
BTW all I want to do now (OTHER THAN CRY UNTIL THE END OF TIME) is talk about Ranmaru.
1. I counted, and he was in a total of seven scenes, one per episode except for 5 and two in the last. He has a total of two lines, three if you count "Aaaahh!" and only one that's more than one word. STILL MY FAVOURITE.
2. He was nearly not my favourite! I was so waiting for him to do something, ANYTHING other than cut a damn apple, and then he did! He... stabbed someone! And I bawled my eyes out and whathehell'd repeatedly.
3. And then he redeemed himself! By... stabbing someone else! His absolute loyalty was really endearing, even if it was to an evil jackass. Plus I swear to god no more than ten seconds earlier I had thought, "THAT SON OF A BITCH, I WANT TO STAB HIM MYSELF!" So yes, nicely done.
4. Apparently when faced with a gun-toting schoolgirl, his reaction is to throw a pillow. I know it was for dramatic effect (she shoots it and feathers fall in slow motion), but I'm still incredibly amused.
On a somewhat different note, Izumi referring to a knife as a "dosu" in the last episode really threw me for a loop because I'd just been internally referring to them as "tanto" until that point. Mad research ensued to figure out the difference, during which the term "kaiken" was introduced and more questions were raised than answered. It took way more research than I'm willing to admit to, but I think I finally got it figured out:
Dosu: A type of tanto used by yakuza, made from cheaper iron than other sidearms in the style of sashimi knives. Basically a cheaply-made aikuchi tanto (meaning the fuchi/hilt collar meets the saya/hilt, i.e. there's no tsuba/sword guard), a glorified kitchen knife with a fancy covering that nonetheless violates the Swords and Firearms Control Law. (Not that yakuza would really care...)
Kaiken: A small tanto once commonly carried by noblewomen for self-defense or jigai/ritual suicide, now sometimes carried by yakuza due to their small, easily concealable size.
Tanto: Straight short sword with a small blade, most commonly used for stabbing.
So basically a dosu is a cheap kind of kaiken, which is an aikuchi tanto. I think? If any flisters/random people are more knowledgeable about swords and/or Japanese weapons than I, please do correct me. I'm actually in a bit of a tizzy over the matter; it's rather pertinent to the fanfic I'm, er, not writing. (Shhh, let my superstitions be.) While "dosu" seems like the most correct term in relation to the series itself, given Ranmaru is pretty damn handy with his knife and he doesn't even carry a gun or any other weapon in a scene in which the entire purpose is to gun someone down it's not hard to believe he'd have a higher quality blade, even if it is a little aesthetically bland. I'm thinking "tanto" may be my safest bet (ironically it's the term I started off using, meaning my research led me around in a full circle), but if someone knows better, again, please do correct me! I'd appreciate it a great deal!
Okay, okay, I know, "Kei no one would know the difference or really care, you could call it a wakizashi and it wouldn't make a difference," but I would know and it would bug the hell out of me, so I wanted to get my thoughts on it out in the open so I don't feel like I'm being deceptive or misleading. (Also a wakizashi is totally different, it has a curved blade and is about twice as long as a tanto for starters.)
What the hell I have class tomorr- today. Damn you, ridiculously entertaining and heartbreaking Japanese television! *STILL KIND OF CRYING*
