'Time can never mend,
The careless whispers,
Of a good friend,
To the heart and mind,
Ignorance is kind,
There's no comfort in the truth,
Pain is all you'll find...'

He sat in the Emergency waiting room, waiting for the surgeon to come and talk to him about Mike.  He interlaced his fingers, unlaced them, and began to drum his fingers along his thigh.  He wondered how time could move so excruciatingly slow, when his mind was in a frenzy of thoughts.  He glanced back at the clock, behind the Nurses' station - and, ironically enough, the clock had only indicated the passing of 15 seconds.  Those 15 seconds, felt like 15 years to Billie.

At last, he saw Mike's Surgeon approach him.  A grim expression, written all over his face, as he introduced himself as Don Rickshaw.  Billie opened his mouth, then closed it.  He drew in a deep breath, and proceeded to ask, "So what's going to happen, now?  How is he?"

"Your friend lost an immense amount of blood.  The blade hit one of the arteries, in his arm." Don sighed. "He required a major blood transfusion, and emergency surgery to repair the artery and veins in both of his arms.  Right now, he's in the ICU recovery room - still under anesthesia.  After that, we will transfer him to the psychiatric wing of the hospital.  There, he'll be placed under 'Suicide' watch.  And, he'll also have a psychiatric evaluation.  He may be committed, he may be given counseling.  Right now, though, our main focus is to keep him alive.  The trauma he inflicted upon himself, is the worst I've seen in my 30 years of working here.  I'll escort you to the private room, where your friend will be."

Billie instantly felt his soul detach, from his physical body.  He followed Dr. Rickshaw to Mike's room, and stood frozen in the doorway once his eyes caught sight of Mike.  "Just call for a nurse, if anything happens," Don said, as he left.

Mike's arms looked as if two marshmellows had grown, on each one.  Standing next to him was an IV drip, and a heart monitor.  Billie slowly approached Mike, as if what he was seeing wasn't real.  And, if he was completely honest right now - he was hoping Mike would spring out of the bed, and yell 'SURPRISE!'

But, as Billie sat down at Mike's bedside, he knew this was the real deal.  And that, Mike might not ever wake up.  Billie felt a drop of water, run down his cheek.  He wiped it away, thinking 'Since when the fuck did it start raining indoors?!'

It was when a steady flow of water began running down his face, he knew he was crying.  "You never did like to see anyone sad.  You'd always try to make them laugh, even in the hardest of times.  Heh, you were pretty good at that.  You were the only person who could make me smile, after my cousin died.  I never thought I'd see the day, where you couldn't even make yourself smile."

The beeping of the heart monitor, was going at a steady pace.  Speeding up, or slowing down, every once in a while.  Mike, still in a drug-induced slumber.

Billie gave a small, nervous, laugh. "I remember the first time, we made love.  We had just gone to the countryside, and layed underneath a willow tree - looking at the stars, in the night sky.  The sun had just set, casting a beautfiul array of color into the sky.  You told me, how you used to count the stars every night when you were younger.  You said the highest you got to, was 300.  I made some sort of joke, that got you laughing.  Then, we began to talk.  We just lay there, talking for hours upon hours.  Finally, it just happened.  A little while after we did that, you looked me in the eyes.  And you made a promise to me.  You told me, that you would never let anyone - or anything - hurt me.  And, I believed you.  Sad thing is, I still do.
I doubt you can even hear me.  I probably look like a complete idiot, talking to an unconscious person.  Mike, I never knew you were harboring something that dark.  I never knew, how much you were actually hurting inside.  And, it hurts me so much to see you like this.  If things don't work out for the best...promise me you'll wait for me, up in Heaven?"

Half an hour after he spoke to Mike, he fell asleep in the arm chair next to Mike's bedside.

'You really think he'll stay with you, if you tell him what we did?'

No.

'What are you crying for?  You know you want this, I'm just obliging to your wishes.  After all, what are friends' for?'

No more.

'Someone's not new to this.'

No.  No more!

STOP!

He felt like he had been dreaming.  He tried to open his eyes, to make a sound.  But he couldn't.  Was this what the land of blood loss felt like?  Just drifting along, lazily on a sea of scarlet ribbons?

He wondered where Billie was.

Oh shit.

He took all of his inner strength, and willed his physical being to wake up.

He opened his eyes, to the best of his ability, and looked to the left side of his bed.  Sure enough, Billie was sleeping.  A light in the ceiling falling upon the crown of his head, gave Billie the essence of a halo.

His guardian angel.
