The first time it happened, it caught Melvin Purvis by surprise. After all, one minute he was just talking to John Dillinger about whatever it was they were talking about -- he couldn't remember anymore-- and in the next, Dillinger was roaring with laughter and Purvis was marching away with a powerful, heated blush.
He hated how often the bank robber won.
The phrase that had turned him away with a blush? "If you were the one behind bars, you'd already be begging for release."
The words themselves sounded quite normal in a jailcell, actually. But combine the quirk of Dillinger's eyebrow and the lust in his smirk, and you got one of few situations that Melvin was unaquipt to deal with.
What was strangest to the agent? The thought didn't disgust him so much as embarrass him. Melvin didn't know why, but he was positively mortified that the man he considered his enemy could read straight through him.
What bothered him more was that he escaped. It seemed almost mocking.
The second time it happened, though, Melvin was ready.
Dillinger's face was pressed between a pair of bars and his eyes were dark and teasing. "Do you like seeing me here? I'm at your mercy."
The agent's gaze darted to the door, where another agent stood, his back to the pair, too far away to hear what was going on. Melvin's shoulders relaxed comfortably. It was safe to do what he was about to. "Yes, I enjoy seeing you at my mercy, Mr. Dillinger," he began smoothly. "But not, I think, as much as you enjoy it," he felt his lips slide into a comfortable smirk as Dillinger's eyebrow's raised a fraction of an inch.
Good, he'd caught him off guard. But the bank robber recollected himself quickly. "You've got me figured, don't you?"
"I'd like to think I've got you pretty sorted out."
"Then I'd like to sort you out."
Purvis's hand twitched. He didn't show it on his face. Instead, he turned and walked away.
The following day, Agent Purvis was not at all shocked when he heard the bad news-- John Dillinger had escaped.
But a part of him was fine with it. He could bide his time for a while. And perhaps a part of Dillinger wanted to be captured... just as a part of Melvin wanted him to escape.
