Chapter Two

Draco opened the pregnancy book lying on the table. Harry had already read through this month’s section and Draco figured he should too.

Baby's Growth
In this second month of life, your baby continues to develop internal organs and other major structures of the body. By the end of the  eighth week, all the organs are present. There is also continued growth and development of the brain and spinal column.

The arms and legs begin as small buds off the body, and during this second month they begin to lengthen. At the end of the arms and legs, tiny finger and toe buds begin to form. Even at this early stage, your baby already has individual fingerprints.

Your baby's eyes and ears are beginning to form, although he will not be able to see or hear until later. If you could see into his gums you would find that tooth buds are beginning to appear.

At the end of the eighth week your baby will be around 1 inch long and weigh 0.1 oz.

Mom's Changes
By this point your body is in full pregnancy swing, and you may be feeling some major changes happening. Pregnancy hormones have caused your breasts to grow and mature, which may cause breast tenderness or soreness. These same hormones may be to blame for the morning sickness experienced by about half of all pregnant women.

As your metabolic rate increases, you will find that your overall energy need (calorie) has increased, especially your need for protein. Some women find that if they are not eating enough they feel lethargic, or may experience nausea. Fatigue is to be expected in early pregnancy, but it should not be excessive. Be sure you are eating enough good food and that you are getting adequate rest to ensure your body has the strength it needs every day.

Your blood volume has increased to help meet the needs of the baby. And blood supply to the uterus and vagina has increased significantly. You may find your vaginal area to be extra sensitive and slightly swollen from the extra blood.

You may also begin to have mood swings. Although increased moodiness is to be expected from the hormonal changes, it should not be excessive. The thyroid is especially sensitive during pregnancy, so you should alert your doctor to any indications that you may be experiencing above average moodiness.

There weren’t a lot of books about male pregnancy, so Harry and Draco relied on this book about female pregnancy. Of course there were many things that the book brought up that didn’t apply to Harry and Draco. However, Draco was already noticing signs of pregnancy and it calmed him reading the book and realizing they were all typical signs.

Harry woke early most morning, nauseous and close to vomiting. He went most mornings without actually throwing up, but he came close to it often. His nausea lasted most of the day but was nothing terrible. Harry was also beginning to take a nap most afternoons, trying to gain more energy.

Draco began noticing Harry had to use the restroom more often than before. Harry was also quite sensitive whenever they were intimate. Not only was Harry’s chest more sensitive, but so was his entire body. Draco found it to be incredibly easy to get Harry off now, and he enjoyed that. Harry’s mood swings weren’t terrible yet, but Draco could tell they were getting worse.

"Draco?" Harry said, walking into the room.

"Yes, hon?" Draco replied, sitting the book down on the table.

"Are you ready to go?" Harry asked, sitting on the arm of Draco’s chair.

"I’m ready whenever you are."

"We’ve got a few minutes before we need to leave. What were you reading?"

"I was just looking at what to expect out of this next month of your pregnancy. I know things may be different since you’re not a woman, but it’s better than nothing. Plus, I wanted to see if I’d have any questions to ask the doctor when we get there."

Harry smiled, "I’m happy you’re really getting into this and reading and just…" Harry let a tear or two fall. "Stupid mood swings. One minute I’m smiling and the next, I’m crying."

Draco smiled, wiping away Harry’s tears, "Of course I’m getting into it. I’m excited about being a father and going through this experience with you!"

Harry grinned and looked at his watch, "We should get going."

Harry and Draco sat in the waiting room of the hospital. Draco couldn’t help but shake his leg as he anxiously sat beside Harry. Harry grabbed Draco’s hand and smiled.

"Stop fidgeting," he told Draco.

"I’m just nervous! This is the first appointment. What is something is wrong?" Draco asked nervously.

"Nothing is wrong, so stop worrying."

"How do you know nothing is wrong?"

"Because, hon, the baby and I are connected through magic as well as the typical ways which lets me feel how the baby is doing. It’s hard to explain, but I just know the baby is fine."

"Mr. Malfoy?" a nurse called. Harry and Draco both turned to the nurse. Having only been married last week, they hadn’t quite become accustomed to having the same last name.

"That’s me," Harry told her, standing up.

He held onto Draco’s hand as they followed the nurse into the doctor’s office. They went through the typical vitals to see how Harry was doing: they checked his weight, blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and other things. Everything was going well so far, which helped to calm Draco’s nerves. Eventually they were asked to sit in a small room to wait for the doctor to come in to check on the baby.

"Are you getting excited about seeing the baby for the first time?" Harry asked.

Draco nodded, "And hearing his or her heart beat for the first time."

Draco stood next to Harry as Harry sat on the examination table.

"I’m so glad we’re finally doing this," Harry told him.

"Me, too Harry. You’ve been so happy lately. I love it." Draco gently kissed Harry on the lips just before a knock was heard.

Draco and Harry turned to look at the door as it opened slowly.

"Hello Harry. Hello Draco," she said as she walked in.

"Hello Hermione," the two men said in unison. Harry refused to be seen by any other mediwitch but Hermione. However, he still wanted to have the normal feeling of visiting the doctor and therefore still wanted to make appointments.

"You know, I could’ve just come to your house. You didn’t have to make an appointment," she told them.

"That’s what I told him!" Draco pointed out.

"I know, I know. I wanted to have the typical experience though. I like looking forward to an appointment like I did today."

Hermione nodded and sat down at the desk in the room, "Everything been going alright so far?"

Harry nodded, "Everything has been wonderful. I have a quick question though."

"What is it?"

"Am I just crazy, or has a magical bond formed between the baby and I? I can just tell that everything is going alright. I don’t know how to explain it."

Hermione nodded and smiled, "No, no, you’re completely right. Your magic is linked and your bodies are linked. If something was happening to the baby, you’d feel it."

Harry nodded, "See Draco."

"I never said I didn’t believe you!"

Hermione smiled, "So do we have any questions at the moment?"

Harry shook his head and turned to Draco, "Do you?"

Draco nodded, "I was just kind of curious about how the baby will be born?"

"Oh, yes, I should explain that. As the pregnancy progresses, Harry’s body will make the proper adjustments. Here’s a book that explains most of it," she handed Harry a small book. "Some changes will be uncomfortable and some you won’t even notice until you need to. But one of those changes is that a birth canal and opening will be created for delivery. That, of course, being one of the uncomfortable changes. Anything else?"

"No, Hermione, not at the moment."

Hermione nodded and waved her wand at Harry, "So you’re a little over four weeks now? Nearly five?"

Harry nodded, "Sounds right."

Hermione nodded again, "Seems like the baby is right on track. Would you like to see the baby? As well as hear the heartbeat?"

Harry and Draco nodded eagerly. Hermione helped Harry lay down and waved her wand over his midsection. Shortly after, an image appeared above Harry’s stomach.

"At four weeks, the baby does look like much yet, but you can certainly see the developing embryo," Hermion explained.

Draco and Harry were two amazed at the sight to really listen to her. She waved her wand again and the two men were able to hear the heartbeat of the child. Neither of them noticed the change in Hermione’s face right away.

"Um, Harry? Draco?" she said.

Harry sat up a bit, "What is it?"

"Listen very carefully to the heartbeat."

The three of them remained silent for a few moments.

"I don’t understand," Harry said.

Draco smiled at Hermione, "I do."

"Congratulations, guys!" Hermione exclaimed.

"Will someone explain?" Harry asked, still confused.

"It’s twins, Harry," Draco told him.

"Twins?!" Harry nearly shouted.

Draco and Hermione nodded. Draco threw his arms around Harry as tears fell from both men’s eyes.

"I think I’ll leave you two alone for a bit," Hermione said with a smile as she exited the room.
