It's happening all over the state. From Worcester to Taunton, Salem to Uxbridge, confusion, trickery, and deception reign in the paid signature-gathering efforts of our opponents.

Citizens are being asked, at their neighborhood grocery stores, to sign a petition to allow the sale of wine at the store. In many cases, out of nowhere, they are handed the anti-marriage equality petition by these same signature-collectors. Sometimes, they are asked to sign it and other times they are tricked into signing it. This confusion, trickery, and deception must be stopped.

The Massachusetts Food Association, the sponsor of the wine petition, states the abuse is not widespread. But we have received reports of this trickery taking place at grocery stores in more than 25 communities around the state-and those are only the stores we know about. The grocery stores tell us that their signature-gatherers are only allowed to collect on the wine petition. However, based on what we are seeing, we know that many of them are also collecting on the marriage petition.

Because of the widespread abuse, the Joint Committee on Election Laws is holding an investigative hearing next Tuesday, October 18. Your legislators, Secretary of State William Galvin, and Attorney General Tom Reilly, need to know how important this issue is to you. So do your grocery stores.
