A sado-masochistic triumph??

What’s up with all the hype surrounding E.L. James’ erotic romance trilogy, ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’?? It seems like everybody’s raving about the novels. It’s Twilight all over again which sucks because not only do I deeply despise the said book but also it didn’t deserve all the recognition. I’ve been seeing people in various public places reading FSG either on paperback edition or on their tablets and it got me curious at first. When I checked it out in a bookstore and read the synopsis, I was flabbergasted to know that a novel with strong BDSM elements has made it into the best-sellers list. I’ve always been ill at ease with romance novels particularly those with steamy and explicit sex scenes so I definitely would never take the time to read this and I may literally judge the book by its cover but this is just not my cup of tea. From hopeless romantics to desperate housewives, FSG had totally won over their hearts and this is what I honestly think: women can relate to the characters and their behavior because their sexual inhibitions are being depicted in a very vulgar way. Maybe they’ve always been ashamed of what their hearts and bodies desire and now that a book known for its notoriety with extreme and provocative sexual practices, there’s a possibility that being that wild and adventurous in bed is perfectly normal. Do I make sense? I’m not sure but I already did my best to explain in the clearest way possible what I though about its readers. What made me cringe furthermore is the fact that the author, E.L. James surpassed J.K. Rowling (author of my beloved Harry Potter books) in terms of book sales! WTF? It has proved to be a worldwide success although critics were not impressed. According to this one article I’ve read in a newspaper, the novel has poor and lousy characterization and so does the storytelling part. It’s almost the same as the Twilight books and I’m not entirely surprised to find out that FSG was firstly a fanfic about stupid Edward and Bella. History does oftentimes repeat itself.
I hate it when everyone reads books based on popularity and not on the actual contents. Ugh. That’s what I take pride in myself in because I only choose literary pieces that are praiseworthy. Hahaha! :D
