Title: Welcome Home
Rating: G, more fluff for you to 'aww' over.
Pairing: Dameron, of course
Summary: Cameron is trying to get settled into the apartment.
A/N I know, I know! I'm supposed to have updated My Best Friend's Hot a while ago but I've had a major case of writers block. So I wrote this in hopes of getting over it. I hope you like it and accept my apologies for not having updated the other story yet! It will get done, I promise you!
It’s Cameron’s first night in the apartment, and he’s not sure how Damian managed to do this, because he’s trembling beneath his sheets while the darkness swallows him whole.
It had been great up until now. He’d arrived and Damian and welcomed both him and Jon with open arms, practically tackling Cameron to the ground before he could even get in the doorway. But that was okay, because Cameron had missed Damian too much to say he wouldn’t have done the same the second they’d gotten inside. Damian had just beaten him to the punch. Somehow Jon had awkwardly gotten pulled into the hug as well, for which Cameron was grateful. Jon was one of his closest friends, and had been even before he knew Damian. He hadn’t wanted any awkward jealousy feelings between the two. Not that he was really worried about it, neither Jon nor Damian were the type of people to get jealous very easily.
After they’d gotten settled in and Damian gave the grand tour, or at least as grand of a tour a two bedroom apartment could get, they all settled into the living room and Damian declared he was ordering pizza for them and they would be staying up. It was odd then, because not ten minutes before walking into the apartment had he felt completely dead to the world, yet seeing Damian again seemed to have sparked a rush of adrenaline and he figured he could always sleep later.
After a bunch of calls from various other glee project cast members and quite a few rounds of video games, Cameron and Jon decided they had enough energy to get showers before bed. Jon claimed the couch, and though Damian insisted they could find some air mattress he had sworn he’d packed, Jon put his out of his misery and saved him unpacking every box just to find it by saying he’d crash on the couch for now. Cameron bid his good nights and made his way towards his bedroom and slipped into his bed. It was only a few minutes until the hall light flickered off and he heard Damian’s bed room door close.
Cameron sighed and turned out his bedroom light.
And that’s when the terror set in.
And, okay, maybe it wasn’t terror because he’s twenty two years of age, a grown man and he shouldn’t even have a problem with this. But…it all seems to hit him at once that this is a new apartment in a neighborhood he’s unfamiliar and it’s also very far away from Texas. It’s kind of unsettling knowing that you’re in a new place for the first time, and the more he thought about it the more the irrational thoughts about city life set in. He tried clicking on his life and sleeping with the light on, but it was too bright to fall asleep that way and when he turned it off there was pitch black darkness in his room.
How was Damian able to do this on his own? At least Cameron knew he had his two friends just outside his door. Damian had been here all alone for the past weeks or so without anyone else here. Despite age, maybe Damian was more mature in some ways. The thought only seemed to make Cameron more unsettled about this whole thing. He shouldn’t feel this uncomfortable. He’s a grown up, that means he’d have to actually grow up at some point, right?
Wrong.
Now he was stupidly standing outside Damian’s bedroom door, trying to control his breathing as he reaches up a hand to knock. He’d tried to see if Jon was still up so Cameron could just say he was too restless to sleep or something and they could watch a movie and end up both crashing in the living room and Cameron wouldn't have to sleep alone. But that proved to be in vain when he’d come to find Jon already completely passed out on the couch, rolled tightly in a cocoon of blankets and leaving him only one other option.
He didn’t get an answer to his knock but instead dead silence. Cameron huffed slightly, feeling even more awkward out in the hallway just staring at Damian’s door than he did in his bedroom. So instead he pushes the door open, ignoring the slight creak in one of the hinges and tip toes over to Damian’s bedside. He takes a moment to admire the sleeping boy. Damian’s always seemed younger somehow when he’s asleep, more innocent. Which is pretty unbelievable considering the boy is only barely nineteen. But now he’s cuddled against a pillow, his body forming to fit against it like it’s another person and he’s got this soft snore that’s actually quite adorable rather than the obnoxious tone that most people snore with.
When Cameron reaches out a hand to shake the other boy awake again, Damian comes to very slowly and groggily. First he lets out of grunt, and buries his face into the pillow while Cameron bites back a small chuckle and tries again. This time he gets a ‘go away’ that nearly has an undertone of ‘I will kill you.’ But when he tries for the third time Damian lifts his torso up groggily, raking a hand through messy dark locks and squinting up at Cameron through the darkness.
“Cam?” He asks thickly, his accent heavy from sleep. “Are you okay?”
And Cameron thinks it’s kind of endearing that Damian’s first instinct is to make sure he’s not harmed. “I couldn’t sleep. I think I got another random burst of energy and now I can’t get to sleep.”
If Damian sees through his lie or just feels bad for him he doesn't know, he just scoots over and holds open the top of his covers. Cameron hesitates only a minute before climbing into the bed next to his best friend. They are guys, they shouldn't be inviting each other into their beds. But that thought is quickly gone as the warmth Damian is radiating takes him over fully. It’s weird, being completely surrounded by Damian, but it’s a good weird. The sheets and pillows smell like the weird mix of rain and coffee that Cameron has come to recognize as his best friend.
And everyone was always pointing out how warm Damian was when they were all together on the glee project and the girls would cuddle close to Damian when it got colder, but now Cameron could really see what they meant. Damian was like a mini-heater, he sort of carried this warmth that seeped deep down to Cameron’s very core and just made him feel comforted. The other thing was the satisfaction of just feeling another person lying with him. It put his mind at ease knowing he wasn’t alone. Soon after getting settled, Damian twisted so he was cuddled close to Cameron so his head rested against his shoulder and his body fitted itself against Cameron like he had been doing with his pillow. And Cameron just felt…calm and comforted. Not weird in the slightest, but maybe that was just the sleepy haze taking over his mind.
The last thing he catches before he drifts off into unconsciousness is Damian moving his head up slightly to whisper to Cameron. “Welcome home.” And he gets chills from realization his mind isn’t fully able to process but just seems to know anyways.
He’s home.
