It was plain to see that Cameron’s slushie experience hadn’t gone as well as everyone else’s.
Damian sat in a seat near the door of the room, leaning his head against the white board that was behind him. As he listened to the others go one about their own slushie experiences. Everyone was just in shock at how cold it had been and how after the first slushie hits you go numb and just push through it. Damian’s own slushie experience had gone fairly well, he thought. By the end he may have been freezing with the syrup sending searing pain through his eyes, but he and Lindsey had had a good laugh out of it and they’d been told they did really well. That’s what mattered.
The arguments on what exactly the slushies felt like came to a close rapidly though when the door opened and Cameron slinked through, a towel hanging around his thin frame and a slightly disappointed look spread across his face. Damian knew Cameron had been really nervous about getting his slushie done. After all, he’d been stalking around set, making sure to ask everyone to describe every detail of their slushies as best as they could. To ease his own nerves or to psyche himself out, Damian had no idea, he just knew that Cameron now looked upset and he wasn’t about to tell them anything good.
“How was it?” One of the girls spoke up to ask as he closed the door behind him, slightly shaking his head.
“Brutal.” He answered in a short clipped tone. When he was asked what happened the tall boy just brushed it off, taking the empty seat next to Damian and holding his head in his hands. Everyone shared a look but no one pushed the matter.
Cameron wasn’t someone who was easily upset. He was the cool, laid back nerdy guy that everyone got along with. If Damian didn’t know better, he’d say the guy was made of sunshine, rainbows, suspenders and cardigans. But he did know better. While Cameron didn’t get easily upset, when he did he turned into a very emotional person. When he got upset it was like he was standing in the middle of a field during a lightning storm. Like the only house in the way of a tornado. A wreck, to keep it simple.
And despite having only known the guy for close to a month he’d seen Cameron flustered over thinking he was cheating on his girlfriend. He’d seen him and Macy go through a telephone fight and Cameron end up drawing the short stick when she hung up on him out of rage. He’d seen Cameron cry once or twice. But for the most part, Cameron was a very well-kept-together human being. Sensitive, but not a complete open book. He just chose to make it seem that way.
“Cam?” He asked lowly when the they’d all been called to go finish their last dance routine and Cameron hadn’t made any move to get up from where he was seated. The others went ahead without him while Damian stayed behind. “What happened?”
The blonde haired male only shook his head slightly, barely lifting his gaze to meet Damian’s before answering. “I just ruined it for myself.”
“Oh, come on, it can’t be that bad!” Damian told him quickly, moving his seat closer to Cameron’s and placing a comforting arm around his friend’s shoulders.
“No, I did! I couldn’t get it right. I messed up and I was freezing and I couldn’t see. I ruined it and I’m going to be sent home. I just know it.” Now that Damian was closer he could see the way Cameron’s eyelashes stuck together with the syrup and slight clumps of the blue iced liquid were still matted in his blonde fluff. “The worst part was knowing how badly I did. I just kept apologizing for messing up and they just gave me this look that made me know I was going to be in the bottom three this week, if not sent home.”
“I’m sure it’ll be fine. Honest, Cameron, you’re the best person out of all of us here. Performance wise and personality. I’m sure you’re just nervous and things seem worse than they are.” He told his best friend as he started to attempt cleaning off his glasses of the blue muck that had turned to a sticky mess, clinging to the corners around the glasses’ frames.
“Thanks, Dames.” He said giving him a small smile and looking up at him, sea greenish-blue eyes bet Damian’s icy blue and they held each other’s gaze. “But you’re wrong,” Cameron said, breaking eye contact again, “Everyone knows you’re the best person here.”
“Do you always have to argue?” He asked as they got up to head quickly to where they were currently supposed to be getting ready for the dance number for this video shoot.
“Yep.” He said with a final smile towards Damian before calling out. “Race you there.” And taking off out the door, his towel left messily on the floor behind him. Damian just rolled his eyes before following after Cameron, wondering how his best friend could go through being completely down to being all smiles again within a matter of minutes. Damian just guessed he was magic.
Even when Cameron did get called into the bottom three for this week, he just gave his friend a quick hug as they had to go separate ways, Damian back to the dorms and Cameron to the practice rooms, and whispered “Show him what you’ve got, Mr. Perfect.” And left him with a smirk. Cameron rolling his eyes but it did the trick to get him ready to go out and yet again face Ryan Murphy. But this time, Damian didn’t have any doubts his friend would be returning to spend another assignment here. After all, he couldn’t just leave the bromance hanging.
