These Things

Roy Mustang had once caught Edward snooping around one of his closets. Which was fine. But what the boy had recovered from the closet was a cardboard box full of old things. Such as; pictures, clothes, knickknacks of the sort, and letters.

The Eldest Elric brother’s complexion portrayed a kid coming across a hidden treasure. But perhaps that treasure was supposed to be hidden. Never the thought occurred to the treasure digger.

Roy felt a little uncomfortable because they were uncovering his past and everything. Not that he really minded, but he felt the need to say, ‘Let’s just put it away and make some sandwiches…’ But no such words came forth from him mouth. No one had ever gone after in search of buried treasure in his previous relationships, or would even bother to do such a thing. But Ed hadn’t been anyone of those women, so maybe it was fine just to share it with him.

The 19 year old flipped though a photo album. But everything seemed to have stopped, he stopped breathing, stopped flipping through the pages, it seemed to be the longest Ed had ever been quiet or stayed still besides the times when he read an interesting book on Alchemy.

“Who's that?” Edward asked, scowling at the older Alchemist. Then promptly shoving the photo album in Roy’s face to get a ‘closer’ look, snorting.

In the picture, Roy was performing his fire alchemy to a cute brunette with her hair tied back in a bun, with the ever so present smirk on his face. He was sweating, his slick black hair plastered to his forehead, his coal colored eyes looked unwavering. A pose of his forefinger, connected to his thumb, snapping. Ed was almost sure he could hear the snap, burst of oxygen alchemizing into fire, Roy grunting from his practice earlier, and the girl’s shrills of cheers and claps behind him.

“N-now Ed-” Roy was taken back that Ed had found the picture he didn’t want him to find. He cocked his head away from the book and squinted his eyes just a bit to see what he was looking to assure himself of the picture. “I was around your age at the time. Just a girl I knew.”

“Attention whore,” Ed mumbled, but made sure it was loud enough for Roy to hear.

He put the photograph book to the side. Then continued the venturing through the box. Sure enough after, they did have those sandwiches Roy was thinking about prior. It was like prying at a youthful girl’s golden locket; just to see whose picture she kept in there akin to a trophy.

When Roy thought about it, he must be so lucky to still have those things. Even though they took up closet space and made it difficult to clean around. But since Edward had burnt down his (and Alphonse’s) house so that they wouldn’t have to go back, or have anything to look back to on their journey. But now, Ed had settled down a bit, well in a matter of speaking, at least his home was with Roy now. Al’s too, because Roy had told the both of them (once when he was given the opportunity) that they didn’t have to stay in Dorm rooms.

Ed destroyed all of those pictures. All of those memories. All of those books. All of those things he once found dear. His place to come back to. He had nothing, except for Al. Now he had Al and Roy with him.

While Roy had once just thought of it as closet space, he no longer carried that idea with him any longer. When he saw the box, a small smile graced his lips.
