One Rescued, One Missing In Rindge Pond
Identity Of Second Person Unknown
POSTED: 10:30 am EST December 17, 2004
RINDGE, N.H. -- A Franklin Pierce College student was rescued from a campus pond early Friday after falling through thin ice while trying to talk another person to safety. The other person was missing, and as divers searched the pond, the college was doing a headcount to try to identify that person.
"The college is conducting a room-by-room search to verify who's on campus," spokeswoman Kathleen Williams said. "We are trying to determine the identity of the second person."
Williams said the rescued student went through the ice on Pearly Pond around 3 a.m. He was treated and released from the hospital.
Searchers assume the missing person also is a student, she said. But she said the rescued student did not know the other person.
"It appeared there was a person on the ice, and a second person (the rescued student) tried to persuade the person to come back on shore," Williams said. Instead, she said, the first person ran off into the darkness, and the student fell through the ice into about three feet of water.
"We don't know if (the first person )was able to make it shore or went through the ice," she said.
Franklin Pierce College, in southwestern New Hampshire, has 1,620 students. The headcount may be more difficult than usual because some students may already have left campus for their holiday break.

Crazy. Only here...
but now theyre saying there might not be a second person, and the first kid was making it up.
Either way, there are a ton of news crews and emergency vehicles here.
Kinda eerie...
