On November 3rd, Pfc. Dwane A. Covert, Junior passed away on Saturday in Al-Sahra, Iraq. Covert was assigned to the 104th Transportation Company, 13th Corps Support Sustainment Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia. Investigators say his injuries were not combat related.
Family members say Dwane was cleaning the base in Iraq where he was stationed. He picked up an object sticking in the ground and it exploded, killing him.
Dwane was twenty years old and a graduate of Kenmore East High School. He and his wife, Jeanette, also a Western New York native, have a little boy who will be two in January. In addition, Jeanette is pregnant with the couple's second child, a daughter due in December. Jeanette says her husband had already picked out a name for his little girl; Zoe.
Relatives say the couple's son, Cameron, was very much like dad. "We read in the baby books how my brother used to sleep in every morning," said Jennifer LaFratta, Dwane's older sister. "Jeanette and I were looking at it. Cameron sleeps in as long as he can."
"He did everything he could for Cameron," said Jeanette. "It was great. They would lay down and take a nap together. Every which way Dwane moved, Cameron moved. Like I said before he's like a little clone of Dwane's."
Jeanette said he was also very excited about the birth of their daughter, the family's first granddaughter. He planned to return home on leave before the birth. "He was very, very excited," said Jeanette. "He knew his mom wanted a granddaughter." She said Dwane picked the name "Zoe" from a song. "It's about daddy's little girl. Her name is going to be Zoe Jane, after that song."
Dwane's mother and sister said he got into his share of trouble growing up. "But in the end he pulled his life together for his family," said his sister. "He was just a great anchor to our family. He's very courageous and strong."
"We're very proud of him," added Teresa Covert, Dwane's mom. "He went from almost going to the wrong side to growing up and joining the Army, taking care of his wife and kids."
Teresa said Dwane and his older brother always had dreams of joining the military. "He was doing what he wanted to do. But he didn't want to be so far away."
The family says Dwane was popular, friendly and outgoing, and said his unit said that Dwane was a great guy and amazing friend. His parents and siblings vow to be there for Jeanette when she gives birth to Zoe next month. Jeanette knows it's up to her to carry on her husband's memory for the couple's children. "I'm just going to make sure they know what he did for the country, and that he was definitely a hero."
She asked that people continue to pray for other members of Dwane's Fort Benning-based unit, the "Road Dawgs."
A Trust Fund is being set up for Covert's two young children at the Bank of Akron.
