WOW! Time flies. It's been so long since I've posted anything regarding Supernatural. Last Wednesday night, I caught the show's season premier. I was very excited about where the story is going this time and wanted to jot down my thoughts right away. Alas, my best laid plan was interrupted by RL. Nonetheless, here's what made me so happy:

Squee with spoilers... )
Alas, I know exactly what you mean. I've been doing some rewatching of the past seasons because I was so bored with season 7. As far as Sam went, with the exception of the shortened season 3, I feel for the most part, the character was either being whiny or he was really fragile. By season 7, I was getting really tired of the "something is wrong with Sam" trope. Besides I think the writer did a terrible job with the whole "Sam's time in the Pit and aftermath" storyline.
For me, the issue started with the characterization of Lucifer. In my opinion, the writers really didn't know what to do with him. I feel they couldn't make up their mind to make the character pure evil like what they did with Alastair, or to make him somewhat sympathetic to the audience. By the time Lucifer went down in "Swan Song", he resembled nothing but a bratty juvenile with power to threw an apocalyptic tantrum because he didn't get Daddy, or Daddy didn't get him. Imagine Sam locked up with him and the dour Michael alone, I just couldn't feel him suffering the bone chilling, soul crushing tortures like those Dean experienced in the hands of Alastair.
