Radiation Contamination - Most Recently Updated 6/21

Jun 21, 2011 20:53

This is a rare and one-time only public post for the sake of helping others. There will not be any other real public posts further on.

I have written to a great majority of companies about possible contamination from their products due to the Fukushima Fallout. I'm going to post the email exchanges here for people to read as they like. This will be a continuously updated post, so check back as often as you like for more brands / information. I am also going to rate the companies in the subject line of the LJ cuts, either *, **, or *** stars, based on the quality of the answer I receive back. Some of these companies have given me sketchy replies that don't really address my questions, so those will receive low ratings. These star ratings do not reflect whether or not I believe them or think their products are safe, only how straight forward I think they were in their replies. The only company I am truly reassured by is Nature's One

Please note, I am a lazy arse and so I am only posting a few of my exchanges tonight, but please continue to check back. I will change the subject line of this post with the most recently update so that at a casual glance, you will be able to see when the last time I made changes was. If you have also contacted companies via email and you would like me to post your own Fukushima researching, I will be happy to post yours here, with your permission. Thank you

Enjoy

This is the brand of formula I use, so I've contacted them twice out of paranoia. First on 4/25, and then again 6/21. Chronologically ordered.
Let me say that I am VERY impressed by their answers and their quality control. I'm very pleased to be using this brand.

Hello,

I just recently called to ask where the organic milk from your formula is sourced from and was told that it comes from organic farms in Pennsylvania. Upon researching it a little more, I have seen that Pennsylvania is one of the states that levels of radiation from the Fukushima meltdown has been detected in the rainwater for PA in levels that are higher than EPA standards allow. Is Nature's One doing anything to ensure that the milk they use does not contain *any* amounts of iodine-133, cesium, or any of the other contaminates that are being detected across the US?

I really love your products and stand by your company completely, I just do not believe that *any* amount of radiation is safe to consume, especially with children, and desperately want to ensure the safety of my children in these difficult times. I appreciate your candor and full disclosure on any methods your company takes in scanning for radiation present in any of its materials.

Thank you for your honest response

Dear Shekinah,

Thank you for your inquiry, Shekinah. I hope the following is reassuring to you. In response to concerns regarding the radiation threat as a result of Japan's tragic earthquake, Nature's One(r) can assure our customers of our product safety. The ingredients used for Baby's Only Organic(r) formulas, PediaSmart(r) nutrition beverages, PediaVance(r) electrolyte solutions and Baby's Only Essentials(r) DHA & ARA and Probiotics have all been purchased before the March 2011 earthquake in Japan. Our existing ingredient supply that was purchased prior to March 2011 will be used to manufacture Nature's One(r) products for the next several months.

Once Nature's One(r) begins purchasing in-bound ingredients, we will mandate that our ingredient suppliers use a qualified third party laboratory to test for radiation before shipping to Nature's One(r). We will also conduct verification testing using qualified independent laboratories.

Please be assured that all of our formulas are manufactured in the United States. The FDA warned infant food manufacturers to take heightened bioterrorism precautions since the 9/11 terrorism events; therefore, we are unable to provide the specific location of Nature's One(r) manufacturing facilities. Nature's One(r) facilities are registered with the FDA, USDA and other local government entities as required by law.

Thank you for your interest in Baby's Only Organic(r) formulas. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

Lori

Hello,

In the immediate wake of the Fukushima fallout, I contacted your company for information on its screening methods for the formula and was reassured that there would be third party testing. However, in the ensuing months, I have been reading reports that the radiation exposure in Pennsylvania, which is where the milk from your cows is collected, is one of the highest areas of exposure in the US, along with California. News articles have been showing an increase of infant deaths specifically within Pennsylvania as a result.

I'm deeply concerned by all of this. I do not believe that EPA Radnet monitoring is showing the true updated figures, and would like further reassurances of the exact practices that are going into ensuring that your product, which I love, has not suffered contamination? Are geiger counters being used to measure post-production products?

I truly adore your company and just want to ensure that there is nothing which could possibly harm my child during his most vulnerable stage of life

Thank you

Dear Shekinah,

Thank you for contacting Nature's One® with your concern. In response to concerns regarding the radiation threat as a result of Japan's tragic earthquake, Nature’s One® can assure our customers of our product safety. All ingredients, including ingredients sourced from US suppliers, used for Baby’s Only Organic® formulas, PediaSmart® nutrition beverages, PediaVance® electrolyte solutions and Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA and Probiotics have been purchased before the March 2011 earthquake in Japan. Our existing ingredient supply that was purchased prior to March 2011 will be used to manufacture Nature’s One® products for the next several months. Therefore, the products will be available for purchase well into late this year and will not contain ingredients sourced post-Fukushima disaster and should pose no concern for you regarding radiation.

Once Nature’s One® begins purchasing in-bound ingredients, we will mandate that our ingredient suppliers use a qualified third party laboratory to test for radiation before shipping to Nature’s One®. We will also conduct verification testing using qualified independent laboratories. The methodology will be determined once we are in a position of sourcing new ingredients. With regard to your concern over where Nature's One sources its organic ingredients, I do want to mention that we purchase from various organic farms throughout the U.S. and do not use milk raised in Pennsylvania (PA).

I hope you find this information reassuring, Shekinah. Thank you for your interest in Baby’s Only Organic® formulas and please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

For those curious, I've also contacted them before about other matters. Their Gourmet on the Go line of products have BPA in the cans, but their jellies do NOT have BPA in the lids of the glass jars. Also, the vegetables in the Gourmet on the Go line are not organic

Comments: Hello,

I have a box of tea that expires in February of 2013, can you tell me when it was made?

Also, what measures will your company be taking in light of the Fukushima fallout?

Thank you very much

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Shekinah,

Thanks for your message to St Dalfour.

Tea expiring in February, 2010 would have been produced in January or February of 2010.

Our plantations in Sri Lanka, as well as the tea sourced in Darjeeling, are certified organic.
This means that thorough inspections are conducted several times a year, including
in the wake of the Japanese natural disasters. To date no irregularities have been
discovered in any of the tea tested, and the natural flavors are sourced from flavor houses
based in Europe.

I hope this answers your question.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Hello Shekinah,
Thank you for choosing Vital Choice Wild Seafood & Organics. Japan's
nuclear accident poses no risk to Vital Choice Seafood. All of our current
stocks of Alaskan and North Pacific seafood were harvested before the
accidents occurred in Japan. All Salmon were harvested summer of 2010.

We believe our seafood is probably among the safest possible food options
available at this time. Even in Japan it is the terrestrial food chain that
is most vulnerable.

We will continue to monitor the situation and announce updates in our
newsletter when they are warranted.

Hello Shekinah,

Thanks for your email and questions about our ingredients with respect to Fukushima. The only ingredient that comes from Japan is our matcha green tea, which is only included in our Green SuperFood Energy. We’ve been in close contact with our supplier and we are satisfied with their communication, QA and testing procedures. All the matcha green tea in our current products was produced before the disaster. We also have 6 months worth of matcha green tea at our warehouse in the US and our supplier still has nearly a year’s worth of product that was produced before the disaster. They have tested their current crop and not seen any harmful levels in their matcha green tea.

Here is the email correspondence from our supplier below:

Healthy Regards,

Brandon

Dear Brandon,

Thank you so much for your concern about us. All of our family and friends were not affected by the earthquake and Tsunami.

Our tea fields, factories, and shipping schedules are not affected at all.

There is a media frenzy about radiation threat for Japan, but areas where radiation level affected are truly within 80 kilometer (49 miles) range from the Fukushima Plant. They also found some radiation level with Spinach and milk in that area.

Most of tea plantation areas are in the southern part of Japan. Since tea plants do not well with snow and frost.

Especially our tea is cultivated and manufactured in Nishio area which is 500 Kilometer (310 miles) from the power plant in straight line. The power plant is located right by the ocean and, most of the time, the wind blows to the Pacific Ocean. Even, if the wind blows south, there is Tokyo, and the Japan Alps which includes Mt. Fuji before it gets to area region.

IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) sent investigation team to Japan and after their analysis, they announced that radiation level in Japan is safe.

On the news they said the investigation team found radiation level in Tokyo as below normal level.

If I get more information, I will keep you posted.

If you have more questions, please let me know.

Have a nice weekend.
