I went back to middle school today

Today was the first day back for the Fayette County Schools from winter break, and my first day working as a substitute paraeducator. My first assignment was at Winburn Middle School working with students that have "behavior disorders".

The day started off well, as soon as I walked into the office, a student went bazerk and asked me a billion questions about my gauged earrings. Then, I was responsible for hall duty the first half hour of the day, which basically consisted of me standing around and looking clueless. Next, I worked in a science class, which began with the school's morning announcements, during which the principal welcomed students back and then discussed an incident that had occurred in which a student had been shot and killed. The news quite a bit to absorb, especially on my first day, but I continued on and helped students research possible experiments on the internet. An hour later, I worked in a reading classroom witch a couple students who new only a limited amount of English, followed by an hour of language arts, with three other teachers, in which I tried to help keep a table full of students focussed on their assigments, and helped them look up definitions.

After lunch, I worked in a music class, and felt completely useless, but at least the music teacher was nice. Next was perhaps the most challenging hour, in which I worked in a life skills class, and tried to help a student with a resume and a sewing project, while other students asked me if I was really a teacher or a kid (this happened through out the day). Finally, I returned to the science classroom, and helped students build towers with toothpicks and marshmallows, which might not have been vegan friendly, but was actually fun.
