I went and saw "Atoms For Peace" yesterday night in Chicago, at the Aragon. It's a supergroup with Radiohead's frontman, Flea, the drummer from Beck, the producer from Radiohead and a percussionist. It was a good show, but I was veeeery unimpressed with the Aragon. The acoustics apparently are no good for any act that relies on little musical nuances, or a lot of dynamic changes, because me and Nappy were unable to hear a lot of things that were supposed to be going on in the songs. Thom's voice sounded different than it does on videos of the 3 shows they played in the states before this, as well--a bit deeper, and at the same time more nasally. Maybe he was sick, and maybe it was the building. Either way, they sounded good. The percussionist/drummer were fucking awesome. They made the whole show, in fact. Without those guys it would've been flat, but they brought a ton of energy. Flea and Thom were able to dance around and supply their stage presence on top of that energy. The only thing I missed was the sound from the guitars in the show. Any time Thom or Nigel picked one up, it was barely audible. I knew what to listen for, so I could barely pick it out, but somebody who didn't know "The Eraser" wouldn't have been able to tell. Nigel's synth parts seemed cut off as well, but that may have been due to the mix.
Now I'm sick with some kind of weird throat/respiratory thing. At least parking was a lot easier than it was the last time I went to a show down there.
