Muse:  Alexander Scott
Theme/ Prompt:  022.  Let me see your scars
Rating:  G
Word Count:  488

Alexander Scott has a lot of scars, its a part of the spy business.  The spy business is a lot of grown men who grew up listening to radio shows filled with their favorite heroes, villains and intrigue, growing up and acting out those fantasies.  Some of those men grew up to play heroes, and others grew up to wear black hats and to start international incidents between two countries on the verge of some sort of war.  Bad guys love to shoot at good guys, sometimes they actually hit, and most of the time they miss.  Scotty has been lucky that way, no one has hit anything important.  Yet.

Its just a matter of time, he tells himself, most of the time when he's in the hospital recuperating, or writing a letter to his mother.  Its just a matter of time before he gets hit, before he goes down like Mike Woods, who was right about to retire, its just that kind of game they all play.  One day, Alex isn't going to make it there in time, and he's going to die, some bomb will go off, or some crazy bad guy will finally get the upper hand.  Its happened enough times that it's just not paranoia.

Scotty's scars stand out against his dark skin, so they are more noticeable then his counterparts.  Sometimes, rarely, women comment on them, ask about them and he just laughs it off, or jokes about it.  Honesty in the bed room is not something he is familiar with, and honestly, he finds it hard to believe a woman could keep her mouth shut about something like that - so he doesn't even try to explain.  One day though, he wants to settle down, he wants to have a nice house in Philly, with a nice wife and a nice little front yard.  He wants a nice job, and a car that seats four, and maybe, just maybe he'll get a dog too.  Then, when he's nice and settled, he'll be able to tell the stories of his scars.

He'll sit in bed with his wife and she'll ask him about this one, or that one, and he'll tell her the stories about how him and Alex got into this predicament or another, how he almost died there - or when he was in Greece he nearly got blown up.  Sometimes, in his mind she believes him, cooing and comforting him when his chest tightens and his arms wrap around her because the memories got to be too much.  Other times, she giggles at his stories because they are just like fairy tales to her, not believing a word he says - but loving him anyway.

Just as long as they get told, he thinks to himself, just as long as someone knows what they mean.
