PASSION
Ok, I'm writing more about this for the future me to read.
I'd been grumpy the few days because the elevator of my block broke down. I had to make a detour to use another elevator to access my apartment. When I'm going for work or wherever, I would climb down nine storeys in my Ferragamo shoes.
Each day, I'll see my neighbours at the corridor. Just you know, greet them good morning, and instead of using the favourite Singaporean question if they had eaten, I would start conversations by greeting them and commenting how the elevator is still isn't working. Like, "Good morning, yes, the elevator is still broken down. I'm going to work now, byebye."
So something happened today while I'm on this daily routine. While I was disgruntled about the inconvenience, it registered that it didn't have an impact on me as much as others when I saw two teenage girls carrying their wheelchair-bound elderly grandmother down the flights of steps.
The scene left me feeling empathetic. I was disturbed by my own thoughts - how am I even so disgruntled over some minor when there are people who needed the elevator more than I did?
At the same time, I wanted to do something for makcik too. Can I?
The RC chairperson, Nancy, happened to contact me this afternoon to follow-up on some other issues. She said she was at my block and asked if I was around, she could speak to me face-to-face.
I asked Nancy if she could do me a favour. I shared with her what happened. I hoped that in her position, she could ensure that the elderly lady is okay while in the interim, the grassroots could assist her wherever necessary while the lift was undergoing repairs. Nancy did - she found out that the family needed urgent financial assistance because of burgeoning medical costs. She sent me a text to tell me and how she is going to pass her some forms to complete tomorrow.
Ok, please always remember that a simple gesture can really make a huge difference in a person's life.
