Me.
The new manager might have found me amusing.
I had been thinking about colouring my hair again. I'm not talking brown or red highlights. My natural hair has brown and red in them for goodness sake. As a 8 year old once pointed out to me some 16 years ago,"为什么你的头发那么多颜色的?!"
I was in a Chinese school then so no, I was no teenage rebel with funky hairdo.
The last time I coloured my hair was about 6/7 years ago. The hair condition got really bad, so I grew them out, and once I grew them out, I couldn't bear to destroy the hair for a long time.
Then I felt like colouring the hair again. But by then, the job scope doesn't go well with non-brown or red highlights. I chose to remain more conservative in the previous role due to the nature of the job.
Now that I've left that job, the idea has lodged itself firmly in my brain again.
So I scoured through the policies and there was no mention of hair colour restrictions. But, heh, new to a role, new to a team, I decided to double check with the new manager, just in case. I don't want him to be pulled up by someone else for a non-conforming newbie in his team :p
So I dropped the bomb on him.
Me: Oh. One final question. HR issue.
Mgr: Yes?
Me: I'v checked the policies. Tattoos and piercings to be covered up etc. But there's nothing about hair colour. But I thought I'll double check with you to make sure. Is there going to be any HR issues if I paint my hair pink?!
Mgr: O_O
He couldn't stop laughing and gave me very diplomatic answers re looking professional and that he has no opinion of how I choose to look.
But he did ask me why quite incredulously.
I happily told him blonde on an Asian is about as weird as pink, green or purple anyway.
When we parted ways he was still chuckling and he said he look forward to seeing my new look.
I grinned at him,"Don't think it'll be pink. Doesn't suit my skin colour." :p
