Part Two

There were six of them all together, and all of them but one was looking at Sam like he’d lost his mind.

“A demon,” the tall man, Jake repeated. “You’re insane.”

“Look, I know how it sounds--” His gaze flickered to Ava, who stared at him dubiously, then to Chloe, who simply studied him, her green eyes indicating she was at least listening and considering the possibility.

“It sounds like you need to be in an institution,” Lily shot back.

“I don’t really care what you think--”

“Sam, demons?” Ava shook her head a little. “Look, visions are one thing, but…”

“Visions?” Lily scoffed. “Try electrocution on contact. I touched my girlfriend and she died.”

Sam winced.

“You know what? I think you’re all loony,” Jake said, holding up his hands.

“Listen to me.” Sam’s voice grew louder. “It’s not a coincidence we all wound up here with no memory of how we arrived.”

“Or that we all have abilities,” Andy murmured, looking at Sam. “I don’t know about this whole demon thing, but…”

Sam glanced at Chloe, who had her arms wrapped around herself and was now staring at the ground. She’d yet to address the others since the group had come together, and he wondered what she was thinking.

A crack of thunder made him flinch and look up at the rapidly darkening sky.

“We should go inside,” Chloe said, looking up and directly at him.

Sam held her gaze, feeling its intensity and the breath caught in his throat. “She’s right.”

Ava was the first one to climb the stairs where Jake and Lily stood.

“Screw that. If you ask me, the only sane thing to do here is get the hell out of here,” Lily replied, turning to head away.

“Lily, wait. I don’t think it’s safe. I think we need to stay together.”

“Sam’s right.”

He turned to see Chloe at his side.

“There’s safety in numbers. I think we need to stick together.” Her voice was quiet, urgent.

“Fine,” Lily said after hesitating a moment. “I’m gonna grab some firewood before it starts raining.”

As Ava and the others shuffled into the old cabin, Sam gazed at Chloe. “Thanks. For backing me up.”

She met his eyes once more. “You’re right. We’re all here for some reason, and I don’t think whatever that reason is can possibly be good. We need to stay together for safety.”

Sam searched her eyes. “Chloe, do you have abilities?”

She hesitated a moment. “Yeah. I do.”

He tried his best to offer her what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “Come on. We should get inside.”

Nodding, Chloe headed up the porch steps.

Sam paused, looking up at the sky. “I hope you’re okay, Dean,” he murmured. Then he followed Chloe into the cabin.

“And he was just gone, Bobby.” The panic was obvious in his voice.

“All right, we gotta keep our heads here. I’ll call Ellen and Ash, and let’s meet up halfway,” Bobby said, trying to calm the younger man.

Dean forced himself to take a deep breath. “All right.”

“We’ll find him, Dean.”

“I know.” Dean hung up the phone and grabbed onto the steering wheel. “Be safe, Sammy,” he murmured. Then he started the car and sped away.

Chloe sat in the far corner of the cabin, arms wound around her knees. Her gaze flickered from Jake to Ava to Andy, and then finally landed on Sam, who stood at the window, staring out at the rain.

The thought of screaming for Clark had long since occurred to her, and just as quickly been dismissed. She wouldn’t risk exposing him to a group of people she didn’t know just because she was a little freaked out.

Okay. A lot freaked out.

It hadn’t come as much of a surprise to her that demons were real. Given her personal experiences with things not quite normal and her certainty that Sam Winchester was neither a liar nor a lunatic, she had no doubt what he’d said was true.

But there wasn’t time to dwell on it or freak out, so she did what she always did--compartmentalized it in her head and tucked it away for later. Rising to her feet and moving to Sam’s side, she reached out and placed a hand on his arm. “Lily’s been gone too long,” she said softly, only loud enough for him to hear her.

He turned and met her eyes, and the breath caught in her throat at the intensity she found there. “I’m gonna go look for her.”

“I’m coming with you.”

“Chloe--”

“I can hold my own, Sam,” she told him firmly.

He hesitated. “All right.” He turned to the rest of the group. “Lily’s been gone too long. Chloe and I are going to look for her.”

“I’ll come too.” Ava rose to her feet.

Chloe repressed the urge to make a snotty retort.

“Ava, I want you to stay here with Jake and Andy.” Looking as if she would protest, Sam shook his head. “I want you to be safe.”

She sighed softly. “All right.”

Relaxing a little, Chloe led the way to the door and when she reached the porch, she froze in her tracks.

“Chloe? What’s--” Sam followed her gaze to Lily’s limp body, hanging from the water tower, a rope around her neck.
