So I’m working in the Product Development Center at Ford, in their Animation studio. The guys I work with do digital renderings of new cars, right now they’re working on stuff for a 2008 SUV thing. It’s really cool. The best part is, they work with a software program called Maya, which is a modeling program they use in the game industry as well. So I’m doing some programming for them, helping them to write some tools that work with Maya, so it’s the perfect job. For anyone reading this who does programming stuff - I'm currently working on a script where you can select any NurbsSuface and then run the script and it will select all adjacent surfaces. A lot harder than it sounds, given the data you have, but fun to work on.
And they’re on the “alternate work schedule” which means I work Monday-Thursday 7:30a - 6:00p, which is an awesome schedule to have, especially since I avoid most of the traffic. And my official title is “Operations Coordinator” which is really cool, even though who knows what it means. And they gave me a raise so I’m now getting paid $17.88 / hr, such a random number.
The people I work with are really cool too - there’s Guiseppe, my boss, who is from Italy, and he has designed several cars for Ford over the years. Then there’s Scott who is the guy who directs what I’m working on, he’s a beekeeper, and sells honey to people around the office, and apparently his wife is a “naturalist” and they do all kinds of nature stuff, and live on a farm, and he just talks forever. I spend half of my day just sitting there chatting with people. Then there’s Matt who is the other animator, and he’s prolly like 26 maybe. And then Habib who is the support guy from Alias (the company that makes Maya), and he’s getting me going with how to start the new kind of programming that I’m doing - MEL Scripts, and the Maya API.
It’s a really laid back environment - they have a 300 cd changer playing the most random music ever. So all in all it’s like the perfect job I could have for the summer. Time to rake in the cash! :) The people I work with all have connections with people in the entertainment industry, and to a lesser extent, the games indsutry. So it will be a good opportunity to do some networking and start working towards a job when I graduate.
