Augustan art and architecture

-This site accomplishes its goal of providing extensive information regarding the art and architecture of the Augustan period. it does so with very few pitfalls; however one weakness of this particular website is a noticeable lack of a discussion of the historical details that gave rise to the works it examines.

-How does this site further our understanding of Roman civilisation? it provides us with a discussion of an important component of every culture; art and architecture.

-one of the most significant and awe inspiring symbols of the Augustan period was the Mausoleum that was built to house the emperor after his death. this site pays this important edifice the attention it deserves, providing useful information regarding the timeframe by which it was built in addition to details of its structure.

-who compiled the material for this site? the material found on this site was garnered by mark morford of the classics department at the university of virginia.

-who is the intended audience of the site/what is the level? undoubtedly, this site's target reader is an individual with experience in the study of ancient roman civilisation. this can be ascertained by examining the lack of background information that is proffered on the life and times of augustus himself. although this site's aim is obviously to discuss the art and architecture created during the reign of augustus, the lack of historical details presents the reader with the challenge of establishing a context for these artworks. without a clear depiction of the circumstances which lead to the creation of these pieces of art and architecture, the website fulfills only a one dimensional discussion of its subject.
