Hey,
I actually do mastering for a living and to be honest, it really is having the experience to know how to Eq going into the compression/limiting stage. Every song is a little bit different and know what to listen for and how to address certian sonic issues can make all the differnt. Not saying you can't do it your self. I use a variety of programs on the market, have a great speaker setup and also am good at fixing problem tracks. I suggest you A/B your recordings with recent music of the same genre and try to match the sound. You really want program that allows you to hear your changes in real time.
