There is a bill in the works to restrict compounding pharmacies -- this could be very important for people who are extremely allergic or sensitive to fillers, dyes, and additives in medicines (people with Celiac Disease and Food Allergies, like my brother and me) if we need a medicine that is only made with a gluten or corn ingredient, a compounding pharmacy can make an allergen free version for us.
While this may not sound like a big problem, it is for those of us that can become very sick or even die from taking a medicine that contains an allergen. As just taking a Tylenol or Claritin-D (which contain corn starch) could send me in to an anaphylactic reaction, taking necessary medication can be risky. it is important that there be a safe form of prescription medications that can be made available to deal with serious illnesses for those people sensitive or allergic to their ingredients. Up to now my doctor has been able to find safe forms of medications for me, but in the event a compounded medicine is needed, it should be my doctor, not the FDA, that makes this decision.
