One step to the right, checkered floor haunting her premonitions and better judgement. One black square, one white. There was never an equalibrium or sense of peace one step to the right or to the left. Only a path and that much more of a distinction. Something she neither wanted nor rejected. It just was, like air, something eternal and omnipresent.
She dared slip a stare over her shoulder into the faceless abyss of the Rebellion's mask and logo, the same helmet that hide humanity and sin to its core. One in the same yet always avoiding each other like perpendicular lines. There was Zero and there was Lelouch. But there could be no Zero without Lelouch and vice versa.
If gods were real, which sometimes she suspected they were, then Lelouch Vi Britania was a god. Zero was the avenger angel. And Lelouch Lamperouge was the luckless trespasser that longed for redemption.
Forever the answer and forever the question, he was something she could easily decipher and forever be in wonder and bewilderment at his charms and wiles. He smelled of freedom but tasted of damnation. With each kiss he consumed within her the fire for humanity and breathed in deep the need for selfishness. Each touch branded her a traitor to her wills and a lover's favorite past time. It was in these victories and defeats that she found herself forever a prisoner to the chessboard inside her head. One step to the left towards happiness and destruction, one step to the right towards abandonment and accomplishment. Which would it be...how would she know...was she the one that would forever wear the scarlet burden or would he help martyr alongside her?
"Tell me what you want me to do."
"I already have."
"Tell me again, Zero. Long-lost prince. Lelouch. Tell me once more."
"Victory, Kouzuki, is all I ask of you. The rest will fall into place when the dust settles and the last drop of blood has dried."
"Who's blood?" She asked him quietly, drawing light patterns across the arm holding her naked form against him.
He remained silent on this detail, as always, and left her to forever toil over the decision of where to move her chess piece and where to leave her heart.
