Paperwork piled past the inbox, reminding him that the real world was calling for his arrival. It wouldn’t be long until she was reminding him of such responsibilities as well. But for now, they both stayed silent and willing under the spell of midday (what a peculiar hour for happily ever-afters to occur).
She stood to his left, offering her dominate and most trustworthy digits for his company. Clumsy and calloused fingers from his left hand slipped around hers in a quick ritual they had perfected through years of unspoken sexual tension and life-changing battles.
They faced the large window and simply stared. The two sets of eyes looked no farther than the glass pane, however. Ornery onyx twinkled at hard and rather amused sepia.
So much could be said without words to get in their way. Sight and touch, the most primal and ignored of instincts, were what joined their muted hearts. That and a never-ending pile of reports that needed to be filed and distributed with his John Hancock in the bottom-right corner.
It wasn’t much, but it was theirs. No white horses or kingdoms with land as far as the eye could see, but Roy and Riza were more than satisfied. It was just enough.
