Detroit Day #3 (Feb 25)

Mar 05, 2008 12:05

We had to wake up around 6:30am! Panera donated breakfast for us (bagels, donuts/sweet stuff, coffee). After breakfast, we broke off into our teams (yay Eh team!) and left for our sites. Today was our first day at Vista Maria!!! The place was beautiful, it looks like a really nice gated school. We met Wendy (the head of the volunteer program at Vista Maria) and she showed us the BOILER ROOM we would be working at. Of course, when we all saw the building and what we would be doing all week, we were kind of confused. But when she explained to us that because of that building, they weren't passing code so they would get shut down, we realized we were going to make a HUGE difference for the girls at Vista Maria. Vista Maria is a transitional home for girls ages 11-18 who have been sexually abused, self-mutilated, tried to committ suicide, have mental health issues, etc. They provide housing and schooling for the girls to prepare them to go back to the real world. Fedex delivered hot chocolate for us as well as lunch (which was donated by Krogar). Today was my first day of seeing snow fall EVER!!! We left Vista Maria around 3:30pm and headed to downtown Detroit! We went to the United Way SEM station and toured their 211 section. After that we walked over to the YWCA for a presentation. At the presentation, we had dinner from all over the world! There was a Mexican station, a German station, a Polish station, and an Arabic station. After the presentations were over, we had the rest of the night to relax, hang out, and get to know eachother more!
