A/N: My first little H/D tale. Unbeta'd.
You know me better than anyone else. You, yourself, me. That face in the mirror - that one in the world where all is cold and sharply reflected on, and nothing is left to chance. You smiled when I smiled, laughed when I laughed… and cried when they took you away from me. It was the first time I’d ever seen you cry - and I hated them for it. Who would have thought? You - the strong, the proud, the unemotional Malfoy heir - crying. That was when I vowed to get you back safely; and never mind what Dumbledore wanted me to do. That was when I knew I loved you - facing Voldemort was nothing to losing you.
* I always wanted to be like you - always. When I heard who you were on the train I was terrified that you wouldn’t like me. You didn’t seem to like me at Madam Malkin’s that day; I felt so badly over that I went home and cried for what you must think of me. My father found me and told me in no uncertain terms that Malfoys were superior to all other wizards, that it was clearly your loss if you refused to befriend me. As usual, he was wrong. I was the Slytherin Ice Prince; I couldn’t let people know how you’d hurt me. So I hid behind the thin shield of Malfoy superiority with a will: my father’s no doubt.
* When we found out where they were keeping you, it was all Hermione could do to keep me from rushing in blindly. Every moment you were in there was another you might have been being tortured. I had no way to tell - the emerald in my bracelet had been burning brightly ever since you’d been taken. When we finally got around the wards and stepped into the Entrance Hall, we saw an army of cold, staring Death Eaters… and a black, petrified Moaning Myrtle. I knew then - oh, gods, did I know! - what Voldemort meant to happen. He held you in the Chamber of Secrets - a place he knew full well only I could enter.
* Six years I kept up my shield - six long years. By then we could see who was really in control of things. Fudge never had any real power; all the orders “from the top” were coming from Hogwarts. Little did we dream… Well, of course, it was very carefully planned. A box of lemon drops from “Fudge,” sent with his very own owl, of course. We all knew - all the Slytherins, I mean - which way the war was going to go after that. Why do you think our parents made us all leave the school? Because Dumbledore couldn’t keep us - the future Death Eaters - safe anymore. We might have gotten caught in the crossfire. We were the only ones left - and that was that.
* Once I knew for sure where you were - as soon as we stepped in the door, really - I told everyone else. Ron set off at a dead run - Voldemort killed his parents personally, because they couldn’t tell him where I was. I didn’t have time for that - I grabbed ‘Mione by the arm and Apparated down to the Chamber. Oh gods, I was almost sure I’d lost you forever. ‘Mione changed into her phoenix form - yes, we’re both Animagi - and started healing you while I duelled Voldemort. The emerald winked out just as your ruby flared - I looked back just in time to block Voldemort’s killing curse. I sent my own back at him before he could react - well, you know the rest.
* When I woke up I saw a phoenix resting on my chest - I didn’t know why, at the time. I saw the emerald’s glow fade… and somehow I knew you looked at me, instinctively. Then I felt my bracelet burn. I was about to cry out - scream your name, anything; you blocked the curse without blinking. Right away there was another flash of green light. When I’d cleared my eyes, Voldemort was falling to the ground, and you were running towards me. I think I saw Hermione change back, out of the corner of my eye. It didn’t matter - you were there, kissing me, like there was no tomorrow. You ask what came of all this? Yes, Harry, I do! ♥
