so, at the deathcab show tonight, which by the way was amazing, i started thinking about things. no particular reason, maybe just seeing lots of couples around. and i was wondering, is there some natural reason that being alone is bad? is there really some sort of biological reason that we aren't complete? or is it possible, just maybe that it' ( Read more... )

i can see how it could be propaganda, in a way. but i also think you're right in thinking that there is some innate attraction that can't be fulfilled until you're with someone who is the right someone. nice thinking

my answer is yes and no. i had a class on victorian love poetry a couple years ago. learned that a lot of what we think of as romantic love, like all the stuff you get from songs and movies, that really didn't exist in people's lives til that time when all the troubadors started writing poems and songs about it and spread the idea. basically this replaced god for a lot of people, like as society got less religious, the love of god became the love of a soulmate. people had love before that of course, and it could still be crazy sometimes, but it wasn't so much this like eternal romantically suffering for your one true unrequited love thing that shows up everywhere now. whether or not we have an innate need for some kind of love, who knows. but- even if it's all a trick of culture and we really dont and you figure that out, if you still beleive in your heart that you need it then you do need it
