Amelia was nineteen years old and already Barty Sr. had made her his unofficial protégé. She was already becoming an esteemed prosecutor for the Ministry of Magic. It seemed impossible. It was all happening too fast, even if it had been her goal since she was eight to become the youngest Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement ever. Her older brother, Edgar, was not even three full years older than her but he also had a successful career and risked his life everyday for the Order of the Phoenix. He had a wife and two children who were in danger too. Everyone was in danger.

Everyone was pining for normalcy. They were getting married too young without a second thought and having children to prove that they weren't scared and give themselves something to really want to fight for. This wasn't normal though; no matter how much they insisted that it was. As far as she was concerned it was just irresponsible. She understood their reasoning, but she couldn't stand it.

Then she met him. Well, met wouldn't quite be the right word as they were in school together for seven years. It was the first time she'd really considered him as anything more than a vague acquaintance though and she couldn't fathom why it had taken so long because he was exactly the type of person she needed in her life. Levelheaded, intelligent, and doing brilliantly within the auror training academy, John Dawlish was a refreshing change from her friends and the rest of her colleagues within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

They were both workaholics who kept to themselves. Until they started going to lunch together regularly that is. Then that became dinners too and after a couple months, it was dinners that led into breakfasts the next morning. She wasn't the type to leap to dramatic conclusions. She didn't get overly emotional, rambling ceaselessly about soul mates and true love. It was comfortable though. He made her happy. She liked waking up all wrapped up in his arms with her head on his chest. Amidst all the chaos and fear around them, it felt normal.
