Saturday night Erika and I were in a pretty bad car accident. We are okay. Erika had some minor whip lash but I received no injury at all.
I was picking Erika up from work around 11:30 pm. We pulled out of the Embassey parking lot and drove down the street to the main road where we had a stop sign. I looked left and saw no traffic comming then proceeded to make a right hand turn. The road I turned onto, Bartram Ave., is a four lane road divided by a grass median. When I turned, I turned into the right hand lane. I then, after looking in my rearview mirror and seeing no one directly behind me, pulled into the left lane. About five seconds later we felt and heard a big bang. At that point I knew someone had hit us but couldn't understand where they had come from. Like I said before, when I made the lane change there wasn't anyone even close to us. A second later we see this car flying in front of us. It hit us on the driverside and bounced off into the grass median where it fliped into the air, hit the ground back in the street in front of us, rolled over twice on the ground, landed on its tires and came to a skidding stop. It was the most insane thing I've seen in a long time.
After making sure we were okay, Erika and got out of the Honda, I had to crawl out her side because my door wouldn't open, and I called 911. As was doing that, Erika ran down the other car to see if the driver was okay. Some how he crawled out of his car and walked over to the side of the road where he sat down with his head in his hands. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought for sure he was in some kind of trouble. Erika asked him if he okay, but she said he was unresponsive and just mumbled something that sounded like, "Yeah...yeah." He was a young guy, maybe 20 or 21. She also said she smelled alcohol while she was near him. I'm not saying he was drunk, but it appears that might have been the case. I guess we'll find out. Blood testes don't lie. The ambulance and firetruck got there about 5 minutes after I got off the phone with 911. Not bad, right? They took him to the hospital. Erika went too because she was experiancing a head ache and some neck and back pains. I wasn't hurt at all, just shook up a little.
While we were waiting for the ambulance to come I was talking with one of the witnesses. He said the other driver came flying down Bartram Ave. He said, "Don't worry, that wasn't your fault at all. That guy was going rediculously fast." For me to look in my mirror and see no one close and then for him to come out of no where, he must have been going at least 70 mph. The road is 35 mph.
I went back to the scene today and his car is still there. Ours was towed that night. Here are some pictures.
Here you can see that his back tire came completely off.
The rear passengers side door must have been how he got out, because every other door was smashed shut.
I'll have pictures of our car once I get down to the towing place. It's funny, if you look at the passengers side it looks like a normal car. When you look at the drivers side, it's completely demolished.
We thank God so much for noone being seriously hurt. I'm not even stressed about it at all. As long as the insurance company cuts us a check for what we still owe on the car, I'll be totally happy.
