This is my rant on www.cobaltandcalcium.com about the greatest guitar player ever. I was rather irritated with the ignorance I found.
I can't believe how many people don't know some of the great jazzers. Man, Django Reinhardt had two, count them, TWO usuable fret hand fingers. (The other two were rendered useless by a caravan fire). And he created such beautiful music, most people with four fretting fingers can't replicate it. Also, Joe Pass pioneered hybrid picking with his single note grace and stunning chord vocabulary. Wes Montgomery inspired so many with only a few years of playing, it still astounds me. Some people say that shredders have no soul, yes, I can agree sometimes. But listen to Steve Vai "For The Love Of God" and tell me shred lost all of it's passion. Better yet, watch Steve perform, he shows you how to be so close and intimate to the music. I have seen some people also mention Mike Einzinger, thanks for doing so. In my book, he is single handedly the most underrated player. From Fungus Amongus to A Crow Left of the Murder, he shows us something we don't see much: Progress. People like Yngwie get stuck in a rut, and while it may be technically grueling, it is so repetitive it becomes a chore to listen to. That's not a shot against him, it's just I wish he would expand more. To the ones who mentioned Omar Rodriquez-Lopez, he is a pretty good player. He does some pretty funky stuff, but making noise doesn't make you a musician. However, to his credit, he does some really great stuff too, take a gander at some of the stuff from Frances The Mute and you will see what I mean. I dearly love Randy Rhoads, he was a very good player and I am sorry that he had to leave us in such a horrible manner. (For those of you who don't know, Randy died in a plane crash shortly after joining Ozzy) I also miss Dimebag Darrell, my inspiration to play the guitar myself, and I think that it sucks that someone who was so great to his fans had to die in such a horrible way. I have rambled here for far too long and I'm sure if anyone is reading this they are rather tired of it, so I will stop. But as far as the greatest guitar player goes, there is no such thing. There will always be someone better, faster, smarter, and more talented. I found that out the hard way my friends. I hope you all have a good night!
Some people are incompetent to the ways of the guitar. Not that I am God or anything, but damn, educate yourself before you call Jimmy Page the greatest guitar player EVER. The guy was sloppy as hell and knew nothing about theory. Hell, I think I am better than him, and I am only my fourth year in, and he has played for how long? Pathetic. One of these days, I will be listed as one of the greatest, you all know that right? I hope you do, because I will make it fact, even if I have to practice til I bleed. I will do it simply because I have the drive to, and it is one of the most important things in my life. That's devotion, that's fanaticism, that's love.
