He’s Chris. She’s Cassie. They’re both fucked up. They both know they’re fucked up. They both know the other is fucked up. Because they’re both fucked up they get each other. They know what it’s like to feel like you’re always going to let people down, to feel like there’s almost no point trying anymore because it’s all eventually going to come crashing down.
No one else gets it. Sid doesn’t get it. Jal doesn’t get it. Sometimes Cassie thinks that’s because Chris won’t let Jal get it. He won’t let her in far enough because he’s scared she’ll see who he really is, and that she won’t love him anymore. Cassie thinks that’s a bit silly, but at the same time she understands. She understands that he doesn’t want to give Jal any reason to be disappointed in him, any reason to doubt him. So he shuts her out. He keeps secrets from her. He avoids her. And he confides in Cassie instead.
That was how it started. That was all it was ever meant to be. It was a relief for both of them to find someone that understood them, someone they could confide in. Their friendship felt like an escape; an opportunity to get away from everything. That’s all it was ever meant to be. That’s all Cassie ever wanted it to be.
But she knows it’s different now. Chris isn’t just an escape anymore. He’s the only one who really understands, the only one who really listens, the only one she really wants to listen. She likes that they don’t have to be anything but themselves with each other, that there’s nothing to be ashamed of. She likes that there’s no secrets; that he’s not scared to let her see who he really is. She likes that it’s not always serious either and that he can distract her from the confusion and disorder that she sees around her. It’s easy when she’s with him. Probably a little too easy, she thinks.
