disjointed thoughts, because that is all that i can really do right now:

1) this whole topic centers around minimum wage - a pay grade that is paid to people who generally have a very select set of work skills, education, age or any of the above. i think taking away the lowest acceptable pay rate and leaving it up to employers to set what they think is a fair price will lead to them getting paid less. they have limited or no experience in the work force. they will not be good advocates for themselves.

2) if you are making minimum wage, your prospects are never that much greener no matter which neighborhood you happen into. it's not like you can decide that you want to apply for some other position because you find it interesting and you think that you could do it given time. options are limited and if you don't want to do _____ job for ____ pay, there is a line of people out the door who will. especially in this economy.

3) unions were started by people who worked the lines at factories at the dawn of the industrial era because the industrialists treated theem so poorly. to this day, i am amazed that the techie crowd has not unionized. if i understand what you are saying correctly, you are insinuating here that people who get paid minimum wage might unionize. if a group with as much expendable income as techies has not unionized, how could someone who serves up food at some random restaurant? why unionize for a skill that has so little skil lset?
