At Panera today; I’m standing at the counter waiting on my meal when an employee asks, “What did you have again?” I responded, letting him know that I ordered the black bean soup. A woman behind me taps me on the shoulder and asks “Is that any good?” I tell her, “Yeah! I eat it almost every Tuesday/Thursday”. She says, “I need to try it.”, then eagerly boasts, “I’m vegetarian.” I give her a horrible stare and walk away to sit down without saying anything more. The woman gathers her food, walks over to my table, and says “I’m sorry, did I say something to offend you? I replied, saying “Yes, you claimed to be vegetarian when you’re clearly eating food that’s prepared using dairy products.” She looked confused, so I continued, “Leave me alone and try considering yourself a ‘vegetarian’ when you actually begin to give a shit about your cause.” Maybe I’m an asshole, but it felt great to unleash some of this hostility I’ve been harboring towards vegetarians.
