Assumptions.

My story begins with an e-mail.

The subject: Pizza party across the street

The content:

"Hi, Rachel,

Dana and Tony, the couple that live across from us on 8 Stanley,
wanted me to make you aware that they're having some neighbors over
for pizza tomorrow (8/15) at around 7 PM. You're more than welcome to
come.

-J"

"J" is my landlord. He lives below me. We never talk. This e-mail seemed extremely odd to me. I assumed that "Dana and Tony" were the couple in the house directly across (Assumption #1) from me--a middle-aged man and woman (Assumption #2).
The whole idea of ordering pizzas (Assumption #3) and inviting neighbors over...seemed really awkward to me. Awkward enough for me NOT TO PASS UP.
So yes, I decided to go.

Assumption #1 - Wrong. I had the wrong house in mind. It was the house diagonally across from me. A totally different couple that I had never seen or met.
Assumption #2 - Wrong. Dana was a man. Tony and Dana were a fabulous gay couple. Tony is a business-y man and Dana cooks and bakes. He agreed to bake me cupcakes for my birthday.
Assumption #3 - Wrong. These bitches MADE pizza and cooked it on their grill. It was awesome.

The evening WAS a little awkward, but not too bad. An older couple was also there. The lady kept telling me how brave I was to move somewhere by myself without knowing anyone and she offered to "be my mom." Later in the evening, it was revealed that she was once a copy editor...and edited the Kinsey Report.
