I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you.
Don’t you need me?
And on this night, and in this light,
I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you.

To say that Kim Wonshik had a small crush on his best friend of twelve years, Cha Hakyeon, was an understatement. What Kim Wonshik felt for Hakyeon went beyond a crush. It was beyond anything he could control anymore. It was full blown love by now.

How had this began? On a very rainy night in October in 2011. A then sixteen year old Wonshik was riding over on his bike to Hakyeon’s house. Once Hakyeon opened the door and saw his best friend standing there soaked but still smiling, he started laughing. Once he found out that Wonshik came over to just give Hakyeon his forgotten jacket back, Hakyeon laughed even harder.

Hakyeon invited Wonshik inside and, scared of his mother’s lecturing, ordered Wonshik to the bathroom where he could give him some different clothes to wear. A shivering Wonshik was down to his boxers when Hakyeon came into the room with clothes that would probably be a little too short for him. Hakyeon let Wonshik dress and then practically forced him to drink hot chocolate in the dining room, which Wonshik wholeheartedly agreed to.

While sipping on the warm beverage, Hakyeon, in exaggerated K-drama style, reached out to wipe whip cream off of Wonshik’s red lips. Wonshik, not usually one to blush, turned bright red and started stuttering. Hakyeon laughed at his friend and then apologized. Wonshik was blushing for the rest of the night.

Hakyeon told him it probably wasn’t a good idea to go back out in the storm, so Wonshik was ordered to sleep over. Wonshik spent the whole night in a sleeping bag on the floor, staring at the man up in the bed. He didn’t get a wink of sleep the whole night.

After that night, Wonshik started thinking of Hakyeon in a new light. Hakyeon was no longer his best-friend-since-elementary-school-days, he was the man Wonshik cared about most. After that night, Wonshik finally realized how important Hakyeon was to him. How much he loved and cared for him.

The next year, junior year, the two, both dateless, decided to go to prom together. The night had been full of nerves for Wonshik. During the pictures, Wonshik’s button got caught on Hakyeon’s fabric because they were standing so close. At the dance, Wonshik nearly spilled his spiked punch all over his “date”. Twice. After the dance, while they were walking to the limo, a drunk Wonshik puked in the bushes. Again, twice. Hakyeon had to carry his body into the limo and, eventually, into his house (“there’s no way I can let you go home like this. your mom would kill both of us”). When Wonshik woke up, hungover and sick, he ran to the bathroom and threw up all of his stomach acid. Before Hakyeon could wake up, Wonshik was out of the house, slowly sobering up.

Soon you will be mine,
Oh but I want you now.
When the smoke is in your eyes,
You look so alive.
Do you fancy sitting down with me? Maybe?

Wonshik saw Hakyeon in everything he did. When he was drinking coffee, he would think about going to a cafe with Hakyeon. When he was writing poetry, he thought of Hakyeon reading it. Wonshik just couldn’t escape the thought of this brown haired demon.

I don’t wanna be your friend,
I wanna kiss your neck.

Wonshik started frequently writing poems like this. He just couldn’t stop. Hakyeon had a spell over him or something. That had to be it.

At age 18, a few months shy of graduation, Wonshik returned to his house to find Hakyeon snooping around in his room. Hakyeon was looking at the embarrassing, sappy, ridiculous poetry that Wonshik had been obsessed with writing. Each word he saw on the page now felt like a slap on his face.

But Hakyeon just turned to him and smiled. He asked what girl Wonshik was in love with. He asked without knowing that he was the reason why all that shitty poetry was written. Wonshik’s heart lept up to his throat.

What has happened to me? I used to be so...so brash. I used to be able to say whatever the hell was on my mind at the time. I used to not be...scared. Is it because I’ve never been in love before, not really anyway. Is it because I’m probably most definitely going to get turned down? Oh god, Hakyeon, I don’t know what to do. You always help me with everything I fuck up, but now you can’t help me, huh?

Wonshik, having to swallow around his heart that was still in his throat, tried to laugh. Not being able to pull that off, he said that she was a secret. Hakyeon didn’t mention the poems for the rest of the day.

A few months later, graduation parties were held. After all the parties were done and over, Wonshik stayed the night at Hakyeon’s for the last time in a long time-Hakyeon was to set off for Germany the next day to vacation there. Wonshik ended up laying in Hakyeon’s bed, not quite snuggled up to the warm body next to him, but not too far away from him either. And then Hakyeon asked about those poems again.

Wonshik thought about two things: should I just tell him? and should I keep pretending? He gulped and went for it. He told Hakyeon the truth. He explained how he fell in love with him, and Hakyeon just sat back and listened. At first, the silence was peaceful, but then it went on for too long and Wonshik became terrified.

Hakyeon finally spoke up by saying that he had been questioning his sexuality before. Hakyeon, a almost sickened expression on his face, said that he had never thought of Wonshik in a romantic way before. That statement broke Wonshik’s heart in two. Wonshik was about to tell Hakyeon to forget it when his best friend spoke up.

“But I guess it’s stupid of me to have never noticed that you’ve always been there for me...to never have noticed how much you care about me. I don’t know, Wonshik, I think I may feel something for you too. Oh god, we could make it work. Do you think we could?”

Wonshik started feeling faint. Did Hakyeon really mean it? Was this really happening? Hakyeon must have seen his bewildered expression because he laughed. He said that he was serious. That he wanted to make it work. He wanted to try it out. To find out if he was really bisexual or not. (not that he knew it, but Wonshik wanted to find out if he was really gay or not).

Wonshik started laughing along with Hakyeon. Even if they couldn’t make it work, they would still be best friends for the rest of their lives. So, they would try it out and if it didn’t work, it didn’t work. They would still end up having, needing, and loving the other. It was just the way their friendship worked.

All we need’s my bike and your enormous house,
You said some day we might,
Till then we’ll knock around, endlessly,
You’re all I need.
