Punk & Art Movements, Questions?

Yesterday when I was researching Punk I began to question the contribution of Punk Music. How many of the bands had a message/something to say, how many were just about causing chaos and who were the people cashing in on the Zeitgeist. I think to myself "Johnny Rotten, seriously?" I know the person I see now is not all there in the head, he's lost and displaced, but frontman of the Sex Pistols. I can never quite grasp how real they are because I found two contradicting cases of which I think "Sex Pistols, yeah they've got some balls and reason behind their chaos" e.g when they got inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame they rejected the honour:

In a handwritten note posted on their website, they called the institution "urine in wine".

"We're not your monkeys, we're not coming. You're not paying attention," continued the statement.

The note further criticised the Hall of Fame for offering "fame at $25,000 if we paid for a table or $15,000 to squeak up in the gallery".

In a television interview, Lydon accompanied a suggestion that the Hall of Fame "Kiss this!" with an obscene gesture.

According to Jones, "Once you want to be put into a museum, Rock & Roll's over; it's not voted by fans, it's voted by people who induct you, or others; people who are already in it."

What I gathered from this is that it's not just FUCK OFF, CHAOS CHAOS CHAOS!!! They actually have reasons and to a point I agree with that they have to say; In their website statement & TV interview they make a lot of genuinely good arguements "It's not voted for by fans, it's voted by people who induct you". But then I read, in 2008 they played the Dutch festival Lowlands. The Lowlands director Eric van Eerdenburg made a statement saying that the Sex Pistols' performance was "saddening": "They left their swimming pools at home only to scoop up some money here. Really, they're nothing more than that."
^ "Festivaldirecteur Over Lowlands". Lowlands.nl. 17 August 2008. Retrieved on 20 March 2009.
which translates into:
festival director Eric van Eerdenburg is satisfied with the Lowlands festival 2008 so far. But he states also that there were setbacks. This way the Lowlandsbaas with acting the sex Pistols glad of yesterday evening " were not; It was real bedroevend". On the question if they can return once more he answers: " No, it is really from the time and they come only even of their swimming pool what money to collect. More is the real niet"
