I was both amused and appreciative last night to hear some rather odd Christmas carolers touring the neighborhood. They were 100% heart and very little talent -- they didn't have much success in staying on key or anything like it, and were clearly working from whatever words and tunes they could remember (with some "la la la" here and there). "Angels We Have Heard On High" to the tune of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" was followed by a couple more carols sung to the tunes of different carols, and ended with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" which (fortunately) is almost impossible to get wrong.
Hmmm, interesting, I thought.
Then they crowded up onto my front porch and rang my doorbell, so I opened the door. It turns out they were from the halfway house across the street (for people with mental illnesses) and they offered me a plate of homemade Christmas cookies. I said no thanks to the cookies but told them I really appreciated the singing.
People singing their hearts out despite intense shyness and mental disabilities is heart-warming: the notes that come out don't really matter.
