today i learned about the rosenberg trials. 1950 cold war anti-communist frenzy led to the execution of an innocent couple. the stereotype of the soviet union to be simple-minded peasants led the u.s. government to believe a couple gave them the plans to the atomic bomb. mr. julius rosenberg and his wife ethel were conspired against. president hoover urges for the arrest of ethel to force julius to talk. julius claims to have been a communist because the only people helping other poor people in his economically disadvantaged neighborhood were the communists, but also claims his wife had nothing to do with it. they were both sentenced to death, even though ethel was a mother of two. by 1997, the soviet contact guy says julius rosenberg only passed military information, not atomic secrets. mr. greenglass, who had a strong testimony against the rosenbergs then says in 2001 he lied to save himself.
i've heard that there are enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world like 10 or 20 times over. isn't that ridiculous? isn't once enough?
