Synopsis: [AU] Words definitely speaks louder than actions.
Sitting with arms around his knees on the grassy hill in front of the lake, Hyukjae sulked as he absently surveyed a young mother and her two children passed by, laughing and enjoying themselves. The sun was setting as it emitted a golden yellow hue across the once blue sky and the distant chirping of the birds as they flew by greeted his ears…yes, it was a good place to mope and reminisce about the events that occurred over the past few hours.
It all began with a simple question at the grand home of his hyung and fellow fashion major, Kim Heechul. Everything was fine and dandy throughout the day because all of the people he knew were invited there, including his on and off boyfriend of six months, Kibum. On and off due to the fact that Kibum only admitted that they were dating when it came to a private conversation between the two of them. Other than that, he refused to speak about it when someone else asks of their relationship.
And truth be told, this bothered Hyukjae more than it should. He knew the younger male was a closed off person who didn’t like to reveal personal information of his life and he respected the fact that he did not like it when attention was drawn to him.
He tried his best to be patient with the other and he didn’t want to mess up his relationship, lest he would have to start over at the beginning. Hell, it took him a little over a year to get Kibum to inform him of something other than his name and if the younger male decided to break of everything, he wouldn’t know what to do. After all, he had been taking a liking to him ever since Heechul introduced him.
Unfortunately, he was now at the end of his rope because that day, Heechul, as well as several others- including his best friend, Donghae, asked Kibum of the status of their relationship. And Hyukjae, who was nearby when it happened, had the chance to hear Kibum’s casual reply:
“We’re not like that. We’re friends.”
Friends? How could friends go around kissing and dating for the past six months?
Hyukjae ended up avoiding his lover for the rest of the day and by the time everyone left, he took the opportunity to sneak past the chattering crowd in favor of going to the one place he could clear his head- the park.
He felt terribly disappointed despite the past few times he heard that reply. It didn’t affect him the first time it happened because Kibum was always there to tell him he loved him when they stayed at each other’s home. But now…now what?
Unable to contain his emotions any longer, he stood up and took a deep breath before shouting out, “I HATE YOU, KIM KIBUM!!!”
That caused the people nearby to stare and the birds to fly away from the trees around him. He took in another breath and sighed, feeling a little more relieved that his pent up emotions were calming down. However, his entire body tensed up when he heard someone talking from behind. “Oh really? Care to explain why?”
Slowly, Hyukjae turned around to find Kibum staring back expectantly with arms crossed over his chest. He could feel his heart raced a thousand miles per second as the words disappeared from his mind.
Sensing that the other had lost the ability to speak, Kibum asked again, his voice calm and level. Hyukjae could tell there was an underlying hint of impatience within that tone. “Aren’t you going to explain why, Hyukjae?”
“I-I….”
“Hyuk” Said male looked up into Kibum’s eyes. “Tell me…is it because of what I said?”
Biting his lip, Hyukjae barely offered a nod. The younger let out a sigh. “I told you that it’ll take some time for me to get used to this relationship before I openly admit it.”
“But…” Hyukjae began, his voice soft. “it’s been six months.”
Kibum carefully observed him for a moment before he wrapped his arms around his lover’s shoulders and pulled him close. “…I’m sorry.”
The older didn’t say a word; instead, he snaked his arms around the other’s waist and returned the hug. After a long moment in each other’s arms, Kibum eventually spoke up once more. “Tell you what, Hyuk. I’ll let your friends know.”
Before Hyukjae could reply, he was suddenly pulled to the direction of Heechul’s home. It wasn’t long before they reached there and to Hyukjae’s surprise, everyone was still there, despite Heechul telling them to leave half an hour prior. It seemed that they were waiting for him to show up.
Donghae was the first to take notice. “Hyukkie!”
Just when he was about to delve straight toward him like a flying squirrel, Kibum raised a hand and told him to stop. “I have something to say.”
Everyone grew quiet as they listened. Having drawn their attention, Hyukjae began to feel uneasy as he eyed the younger male to his left. Then, without warning, Kibum pulled him into a firm kiss that lasted for about two seconds and said, “Hyukjae and I are in a relationship and had been for six months.”
Hyukjae was somewhat in a daze by the kiss but he could hear the cheers and shouts coming from his friends.
“I knew it!” Heechul cried out, victoriously. “I knew you two were going steady! Kangin and Yesung now owe me twenty bucks!”
“I thought Kibum was only consulting him!” Kangin groaned loudly, having lost the bet as he retrieved the money from his wallet. Yesung soon followed after in defeat.
As Hyukjae was hugged by an enthused Donghae, he heard his boyfriend muttered, somewhat discomfited, “We’re openly official. Are you happy?”
The older let out a chuckle as he pressed a sweet kiss on Kibum’s cheek. “Yes.”
End.
