The large teen trudged through the snow. It was getting deeper as he walked. Soon, he’d have to go into town and try to get boots that actually fit him. A tough order. Until then, he just had to deal with it. Making a nice pathway to the lake where he would take his breadcrumbs (because lake monsters were sort of like ducks, right?). He paused a moment under a tree to get his bearings.
It wasn't often that Ohtori saw someone taller than him, Kabaji was the quiet boy from his classes, but beyond that he knew nothing about the other boy. Well, maybe that and that he made amazing scarves. So when he spotted the other male heading toward the lake, he sped up to try and thank the other for his kind gift.
"Kabaji-san!" He was in enough of a rush to move about the trees that he failed to hear a heavy branch above him snap. In fact, he'd been completely unaware up until the snow smothered piece of dead wood crashed down heavily across his back, most likely loosened from the previous earthquake and the heavy snowfall. The initial shock knocked the air from his lungs, and he could feel several ribs break and splitter beneath the weight.
He heard his name called and he turned to see a white haired boy almost his height calling out his name. In the next moment...OH GOD! His eyes went wide and his heart leapt into his chest. Oh no...ohno. He had to...he had to get help. No...He had to help and then get help. He had to...
Breathe..Stop panicking. He ran over, having forgotten to do either. Eyes upon the crushed person. The limb looked so heavy and the boy looked really hurt. Okay...think...think...First things first. “I...I’m going to get this off of you.” It was such a heavy thing too. It should have been impossible for him to lift. Yet he put his hands around the limb, set his feet and lifted. Muscles in his arms, his back, his chest, his legs. They strained against his better fitted school uniform as he lifted and then tossed the limb away as if it were the lightest thing in the world.
Now what...oh...right. “HELP!!” He reached out to take his classmate’s hand. He wasn’t going to leave him out there broken.
There was nothing but cold darkness until the weight seemed to miraculously disappear. At their first chance, his crushed lungs mended and greedily demanded air. With a pained gasp, Ohtori pulled in a deep breath, noting that there was some serious damages. By all rights, he knew he should be dead. Hearing the terrified voice above him screaming, he suddenly recalled he was near to Kabaji when he was struck. Forcing himself to speak in spite of his screaming ribs, he first squeezed the hand that had taken his reassuringly.
“Please. Calm down. I’m fine.” He coughed, noting some blood in the snow beneath him. Well, that doesn’t help in arguing his case. “Or I will be...”
Calm! CALM!! How could he be calm! A person had just been hurt. Crushed. And help wasn’t coming. It...He felt the squeeze and his voice cut off. He looked down, large brown eyes filled with such concern. Fine...how could he be... Blood on the snow. Red. Ugly. Kabaji frowned deeply. Why wasn’t help coming. He had to...he had to do....something. Anything. But he couldn’t make a doctor. That was too complex a noun for him to control.
His other hand was shaking and he barely managed a legible first aid kit in the snow. He mumbled the word and hoped for the best. Illegible as it was, his intentions were pure. A full kit didn’t appear though. Just a box of bandaids. He felt suddenly very very useless in the face of this. “I....I’m sorry...I...I’ll stay with you until help comes...” If help came. He considered a flare of some sort. However writing in the snow offered a dangerous gamble for results. Instead of a flair shooting off to the heavens, he could easily blow them both up and then they really would be in trouble. “Just...don’t move okay...” He was already taking off his jacket to lay over the other. If he got sick or cold, so be it. The injured teen needed it more.
Ohtori turned his head in time to see the other boy writing in the snow, hearing soft words, he blinked as a box of bandaids seemed to materialize from nowhere. In spite of the pain, he laughed quietly. “That’s a really cool power.” He winced as another bone dislodged from his skin and slid back into place, mending.
“Help isn’t coming.” The pale boy muttered, trying again to push himself up on his arms so he could at least try to offer the other boy a reassuring smile. All he really wanted was to curl up and scream, pain was such a short lived and rare thing for him that he had a very low tolerance for it, but instead he attempted to calm the other boy. “I’ll be ok. Promise. Just- do you think you can help me up? It’s cold out here...”
He wrapped the coat more securely around the slightly shorter boy, not saying a word about the other’s acceptance of his ability. Instead he considered what he needed to do in order to get his classmate help. He knew that it wasn’t all right to pick someone up who was hurt, but he really didn’t have any other choice, did he? He frowned a little more, concern still lined deeply on his face.
“I...forgive me...” he rumbled and then his arms slipped under Ohtori and he lifted. It was simply surprising just how easy it was for Kabaji to lift even someone the pale boy’s size. It was like he weighed less than nothing. He held the other careful and close, keeping his coat wrapped around the other. “I...I’ll take you inside and...and get a teacher.” The bread crumbs for the lake monster were forgotten upon the snow as he turned to head back towards the school.
At first Ohtori thought the other boy was just going to help him up, with his height he had to weigh quite a bit even if he was rather slim. But no sooner was a slightly larger jacket wrapped around him and he found himself being carried like one of the girls on the covers of those books his sister liked. Jumping slightly, he wrapped his arms around Kabaji's neck and buried his face to hide the embarrassment at being carried like that, and to silence a plea not to drop him.
"No teachers.....please..."
There was no chance that Kabaji would be dropping the other teen. He was certain that the other could feel the strength in his arms and in his broad chest when he clung a little closer. Kabaji was solid and he was very strong. He was also terribly gentle, trying the best he could not to walk in a way that would jostle the one in his arms.
He knew that teachers were probably available in the school proper, but it wasn’t the closest thing to them. With an injured person, Kabaji wanted to get him out of the cold as quickly as possible. “....I....” He didn’t understand but if the other insisted, “Usu.” he finished, keeping the other held close to his chest only shifting him slightly in order to open the door he had decided to go through. The door that would lead them both back inside the Junior dorm. Then he was stepping through, still carrying his pale cargo...carrying him over the threshold like some sweet bride on her wedding day.
“I’ll....find some place...warm...for you...” He promised.
Daring to look up again as he was rearranged to open a door, Ohtori looked almost relieved. The nearest building had been the junior dorms! "C-can you just take me to my room? Number 3." He buried his face again, this time feeling bad for troubling his silent classmate. "The door isn't locked. Sorry for scaring you..."
He shifted the other teen again. It felt...strange. Like Ohtori was squirming a little against him. But he was perfectly still in his arms. He was perplexed by this but said nothing, instead, carrying the other straight to his requested room. Number 3. Kabaji’s own was a ways down the hall.
Once again, the pale teen still in his arms, he opened the door. “S...sorry for the intrusion...” He muttered, stepping inside with the other boy and shutting the door behind him. Then it was a straight like to carefully. So...so so carefully, lay Ohtori onto a bed. Putting him there with such care it was as if he was some fragile crystal that the larger boy was terrified he would shatter. “I... I’ll turn up the temperature...and try...to make you...a proper first aid kit now...” If he could find a pen and some paper.
The moment he was on his bed, the tall boy sat up carefully and looked up, “It’s ok. I have everything I need here.” He blushed and started stripping off the uniform shirt, making a face at the crimson staining that would likely never wash out. It seemed he would be caught again, and perhaps scolded for his carelessness, even if this was just a freak accident. “Watch-” He pointed to a shard of bone sinking back into his body, the wound sealing in plain sight. “I- I’m a healer. So please....you’ve already helped so much...”
Red colored his cheeks when Ohtori stripped his shirt off. While he shared a room with another boy, Kabaji had always been very polite about not looking when the other changed. He sort of hoped Shinji did the same for him. But seeing the other and seeing the damage, worry sprung up anew. He wanted to tell the other to lay back down but instead, he stood dumbfounded while the other boy healed.
“............” Silence was his answer and he just stood there and shook his head a little. He wasn’t mad that Ohtori didn’t tell him beforehand. He would have been likely not to have listened due to his initial panic. Besides, some people, himself included, didn’t like others knowing what it was he did. Then after a moment, he approached, hands fidgeting a little with one another. “So...you...you’re really...going to...be okay?” He seriously needed and wanted to know.
He was likely never going to be used to people looking at him, but he knew this was the best way to help the other boy calm down a bit. What he was not going to tell him was that it was deep internal damage and while he would live and heal in time, he could already tell he was going to be in pain for a few days. “Yeah, I’ll really be ok....I’d have died though, if you hadn’t gotten me out from under that tree branch...that was amazing.”
He smiled sheepishly and carefully grabbed a small pack of antiseptic wipes to clean up his skin a bit, revealing only dark bruising where bones had been sticking through not long before. “I just wanted to thank you for the scarf....and I’ve gone and upset you and ruined your jacket... I am so sorry...”
He shook his head, still looking down. “That...” He didn’t know how to put it. “That’s my..other ability...” It was how he had been able to lift and carry Ohtori like he was a kitten (minus the ride in his pocket). “I...” He didn’t think he could ask the other boy to keep what else he had seen out there a secret. He didn’t want to make the other feel guilty for what was just an accident.
“And....It...it’s okay...I can...get another one...” Jackets didn’t matter. His classmate was safe and warm and going to be all right. In the scheme of things, one dirty, blood flecked jacket was a small price to pay for that peace of mind. “And...I...I’m not upset. I...I was....” He looked up and muttered “I was really really worried.” That was putting it mildly.
“Ah. I can heal myself...obviously. And others. I’m better at healing others.” He smiled faintly, still feeling a bit guilty for causing the other boy so much stress. Finishing cleaning up most of the bloodied mess, he moved carefully, wincing at each step to get a clean sweatshirt. Pulling it on with a small whimper, he sat back on the bedding and studied the jacket with a frown.
“We’re about the same size, kinda. You can borrow one of mine until after class tomorrow. Then, we can go to town. The least I can do is get you a replacement jacket and dinner for saving me... please?”
He watched the other moving, heart clenching for every single wince. “I...could have...gotten that...for you...” He murmured, more to himself than to Ohtori. Unlike with Atobe, when he had fallen, Kabaji couldn’t scold the other teen if only because he hadn’t been doing anything dangerous. What was dangerous about crossing a room and putting on a sweater?
He looked around and grabbed a chair from the desk, sitting on it, determined to stay put until he was positive Ohtori was all the way healed. he blinked at the offer and the question. They were almost the same height, but Kabaji was quite a bit broader. However, without one, he would get into trouble for being out of uniform. For a few days he supposed it was okay to wear a jacket that might be a little tighter on him.
“You...really don’t have to....but...I wouldn’t mind...The ladies...at the shop...always scare me...just a little.” Always swarming him and talking up a storm expecting something back out of him and then petting his muscles and asking him if he was a wrestler or lifted weights or something.
“I’ve already been a bother enough,” Ohtori smiled gently and looked at the other boy thoughtfully. After a moment, he carefully stood back up and went to find the slightly oversized jacket that he wound up with. It would probably still be a little tight on Kabaji, but hopefully not uncomfortable. Handing it over, he then gingerly sat back down, carefully masking the pain. When Kabaji left, he could drop the facade. “I think they expect me to bulk up some, but my uhm...ability...seems to extend to not putting on any weight. Probably something with my metabolism. But this should do until tomorrow.”
Thinking about the shop, he had to laugh a bit about the ladies there, he knew about them being a little overwhelming. “They are sort of scary. Last time I went in they were going on about daughters about my age and things like that. It’s embarrassing.”
He accepted the jacket but didn’t put it on. He just hugged it to himself as he watched the other teen. He nodded again, glad that he wasn’t the only one who had that problem. In fact, he muttered. “What...do you tell them?” Because he was so terribly hesitant with words, knowing what someone else said might help him form words of his own to defend himself against good natured overzealous attempts at matchmaking.
“I usually say I am focusing on school right now, and it wouldn’t be fair to their daughters to have a boyfriend that is too busy to give them the attention they deserve.” Ohtori smiled slightly, it usually seemed to work. But it had backfired before and made them clamour for his number for their daughters before as well. “I can’t exactly say I’m a mutant or that I think I prefer guys- that is just too embarrassing to have float around town.”
He started to nod at that and then just blinked. He knew what went on at the school. He wasn’t blind, or stupid. He was more than aware of the relationships and...other things that happened. He just wasn’t expecting anyone to say it out like that. He guessed a lot more guys were far more open about things than he himself was. He was still trying to make peace with the idea that he too had those leanings.
He decided to ignore that part of it and just nodded more. “Usu...I...know...I...I hope it’s okay...if I use that too...I...” He sighed. He wasn’t good with words at all.
Feeling a bit awkward about his admission, Ohtori put his hands up defensively, only to curl back up in pain at the sudden movement. Forcing a small smile on his face, he looked at the other. “I- I mean I’m not going to hit on you or anything like that....” A pause and another panic stricken look followed, “I mean you are handsome and stuff. Really!” He swallowed, “I’m just....passive in it.”
He hoped that made some sense, as he ran his fingers through his hair and tried to return to the more important subject. “You can. Or just tell them you already have someone.”
He couldn’t even look at Ohtori now. The carpeting suddenly had become the most interesting feature in the room. He felt bad suddenly for his shocked reaction to this all. And even more embarrassed when the pale teen continued to dig himself deeper. “I...never expect that...” He admitted. “I’m...the last person...anyone...would want to make a pass at.” Except for older women for their eligible daughters. “So...it’s okay...don’t force yourself...to try and explain...I...understand.” Even if the other had said he was handsome, Kabaji was convinced it was only because the twins and Taki had done something magical to transform him. On his own, he was nothing to write home about.
“And....I...think I’ll use the first...I...I’m not...that good at lying...” Because he didn’t have someone and he didn’t honestly know anymore more just what he wanted in a someone.
Ohtori frowned and chewed the inside of his cheek before looking up at the other boy and clearing his voice. “Why do you think that? I mean...you are nice...who else would save kittens and make scarves for everyone because it got cold out?” He carefully forced himself to stand again, making a mental note that all of this up and down was a horrible idea. “You have strong features, you are strong-” he rested a hand on the other’s shoulders and kneeled a bit to catch his eyes. “I am sure someone will make a pass. They are probably just shy.” In fact, every single one of the people he ‘spent time with’ now was through an accident or their making a pass at him.
He couldn’t tell the other boy why it was he thought that. At lot of it had to do with his poor self-image of himself. Especially with such pretty men around the school. And being nice and being handsome were two separate things all together. He blinked a little when he felt the touch.
He shook his head a little. He doubted it was because they were shy. It was because he wasn’t really anyone’s type. Honestly, he didn’t have the courage to make the attempt himself. He didn’t feel comfortable with this line of conversation. Instead, he muttered, “The kittens are happy... And...you really...shouldn’t move around if you’re still...hurting...”
"Probably hurt for a few days." Ohtori mumbled and carefully hugged the other boy, starting to realize that he may have technically have died for a moment when the branch hit him. Shaking his head, he pulled away "so what sort of foods do you like so I can figure out where we should go for dinner tomorrow?"
Kabaji wondered if the other was okay even more so after the hug. There was a lot of him to hug and none of it was very soft at all. But it seemed that the other second year was okay after, so he supposed he didn’t have to worry about it too very much. Plus, it sort of felt nice. He liked hugs. Giving and receiving.
At the question, he thought for a moment. “I...like pizza...” By himself, he could eat a whole one.
“I bet you give good hugs.” Ohtori smiled playfully and settled down again, this time laying down carefully so he would stay put and at least try to work on healing some more, he could still feel his ribs shifting about unnaturally, probably in protest to his continued rising and sitting. Shifting to rest against a pillow so he could look at Kabaji, he grinned. “Pizza is great. I haven’t had it in a while. I can almost eat a whole one on my own.”
He actually laughed quietly, his deep voice a small rumble of merriment. “Usu...My roommate...can attest to that...” He had given Shinji a fair number of hugs when the other boy needed them. He was relieved though that Ohtori had sat down. At least now he didn’t have to be concerned about the pale boy’s pain.
Kabaji looked at his hands a little and mumbled. “Almost? I...might eat more than one...I...I’m growing again.” He was sure Ohtori understood that. It looked like he had his fair share of growth spurts. “So...we might have to get...a few...I...I don’t mind...the flavor...just.” He looked up. “No anchovies...” He made a face, tongue sticking out in slight disgust.
"Maybe I could have one when I am better?" He knew the importance of a good hug and was always happy to give and accept them now that he had mastered not making people sick.
"Then we'll get a bunch of pizzas, no anchovies, but a lot of other toppings and eat until we are ready to burst."
He couldn’t deny such a request. Especially since he would get to wait until Ohtori was better. “U...usu.” He agreed. “But only when...you’re sure you’re okay...” Because he didn’t want to risk breaking someone who was still fragile. Though the idea of someone who could heal. It meant that maybe he didn’t have to hold back as much with the pale boy. He still would because he knew nothing else.
“And that...sound...wonderful... I...guess I’ll come here...and we can go from there..” It almost sounded like a date but Kabaji had never been on a date before. He wouldn’t know how to act if it was. This was just two friends going to pizza because one wanted to thank him.
"Say 6? That will give us time to get you a new jacket and eat by 7?" He knew he would still be sore that time tomorrow, but by then he could hide it better.
Six? He didn’t think he had anything else going on at that time. He nodded. “Usu.” 6 it would be, and with them both in the same dorm building, it would make it easy to come over as well.
“Great.” He looked over at the other boy, not entirely sure what to say now. Had he just asked the other boy on a date? “Uhm, Kabaji-san. Really, I want to thank you for the scarf. I’m just glad I wasn’t wearing it today. I’ve never been given anything handmade before.” Not counting love letters and candy for his least favorite holiday/birthday.
He smiled a little at Ohtori. “I...I’m glad you liked it...I didn’t know what colors you liked...so I just guessed...” He felt a little bad that Ohtori hadn’t gotten handmade gifts before. He wondered if he would like cookies or other such crafty little presents. Not that he was going to shower him with gifts or anything. Just...just until he was sure the other was completely healed. Sick and hurting people needed presents to help them get better. Like flowers. In fact, he sort of blurted. “Ohtori-san...what...kind of flowers do you like?” As if the question made perfect sense in their present conversation.
Ohtori looked up at the other boy at the strange question, his face heating up a bit. Flowers? “I uhm....I don’t know. I’m not really good with plants and things like that.” Another pause as he chewed his lip thoughtfully. Why would he ask something normally reserved for girls? “...Why? Is... is tomorrow a date?”
He turned just as red in the face and shook his head adamantly. It wasn’t a date. It...really really wasn’t a date...wasn’t it? It would be really nice of it w....NO! It wasn’t right to impose on Ohtori’s kindness. “I...it’s just...” he started to shyly mess with the edge of his shirt. “You...and flowers...” Why couldn’t he just say it!? It was so so frustrating. Try again...slower this time. “Hurt people...get flowers...to make them....feel better.” There! Success!! “I...wanted to...give you some.” Regardless that it was the middle of winter in Hokkaido and flowers were at a minimum.
"Ah-I uhm- didn't mean to make it sound bad or anything.....I mean if you wanted to think of it as a date..... That is okay. It could be...." Wow, this was getting awkward. "I mean assuming you even..." Ohtori chewed the inside of his cheek as he tried thinking this through before settling lamely on the flower subject. "You don't have to get flowers for me, really."
Awkward didn’t begin to cover this. He was certain his shirt hem would be all wrinkled by the time he left the room. He wished he could stop blushing. Especially since the more it was hinted at the more he did sort of want it to be a date. “I’d like it...to be....” He all but whispered. He was certain he’d never be his proper color ever again. His face was burning red all the way to his ears. “And...I...I want to...So...so please...tell me which you like best...So...I can give them to you.” He really did want to because he was sure that would help Ohtori get better faster. Plus nice boys like him deserved flowers.
Ohtori smiled faintly and nodded, "then it's a date." He couldn't help feeling a bit of a rush, even if it had not been his intention to have it start as such, there was no denying that Kabaji was sweet and handsome in a strong way. Thinking about flowers, he'd remembered liking the simple daisies that grew in her window box. They were clean and cheerful looking, and he had been told they stood for purity and innocence. A suiting reminder of his rescuer. "I sort of like daisies."
He nodded a moment. Since it was a date...and because Ohtori already knew what it was he did... He went back over to the desk and once again started to write. “Daisies.” Just as before, with the bandages, something appeared. This time it was a small bouquet of the pure little flowers. Picking it up, he turned around and held them out towards the pale teen. “Here...Ohtori-san...I...I hope you get better soon.” He smiled shyly and wonder if he could give Ohtori daisies again for their...their....date. It really was going to be a date. It made him blush again and also happy. His first real date and with a sweet and handsome person that didn’t have to struggle to look him in the face.
Blinking at the appearance of flowers on in the other boy’s hand, Ohtori smiled brightly. “Definitely cooler than mine,” he commented softly. His mutation was all practical unless he decided to take on some sort of job as a sideshow act. Accepting the flowers with a slight blush, he leaned up on his elbow to kiss the other boy gently on his cheek. “I feel a ton better already.”
He just shook his head. But of Ohtori thought it was cool he wasn’t going to argue with him. Mostly because Kabaji wasn’t the sort to do well in verbal confrontations. Instead he just remained silent and accepted the small kiss. Definitely, he was never ever turning back to his proper skin tone again. He was sure he would be permanently red. He opened his mouth to say that Ohtori was more than welcome but absolutely no sound came out. He was sure that was his cue to get out of that room before he did blurt something about that would make him want to crawl into a hole and die.
Rapidly, Kabaji maneuvered to the door and sort of fumbled with the knob before he managed to get it open. He attempted to talk again. “.............” So much for see you later or see you tomorrow. Instead, he just gave it up and let himself out to immediately lean against the wall next to the door and put his hand to his cheek. He didn’t even know what to do now! He’d never been on a date! Maybe he could ask Watanabe-sensei. Surely the kind school counselor would know what to do.
Ohtori could only blink in confusion as Kabaji opened his mouth again and again like a trout out of water and then darted out of the room. Frowning as the door closed, he lay back down and sighed. Perhaps it was not a date...and he had accidentally pushed the other into something he did not want. He would just have to wait and see what happened tomorrow.
