Rating: PG-13 for a curse or two
Summary: Echizen takes a frowned upon nap in the onsen. Yukimura is a good senpai.
Echizen never passed up an opportunity to go to the onsen, but not having hot water was the final straw in the matter. He diligently biked there every day to enjoy a nice long soak.
And inevitably, while relaxing in the hot waters of the spring, Ryoma would slump against the side of the tub in unconscious slumber. He couldn’t help it, when he felt so warm and comfortable. The other patrons didn’t seem to mind, since his sleeping didn’t really bother anyone, and he never fell into the water.
It wasn't often Yukimura made his way to the onsen, but he swore that if he had to run into Fuji and that unnerving smile of his one more time today - before it was time for bed at least, then he couldn't very well avoid it - he'd go crazy. So getting as far away as possible (as far as was excusable at least) and getting something out of it at the same time, sounded like a good plan.
So. Here he was, wearing only sandals and the towel he had wrapped around his narrow hips. He hadn't really expected the onsen to be crowded, but that there were so few people around - initially he thought he was completely alone - actually surprised him. He then noticed a vaguely familiar boy, who appeared to be asleep, and he stepped up to the water, and the boy. That's dangerous... Frowning, Yukimura slid into the water and hoped that the sudden movement would wake the boy up. But to help matters along the way, he also called out, voice low:
"Hey, you."
Echizen stirred vaguely at the movement but didn't wake up. His dream about being cuddled in his warm bed with Karupin and sleeping peacefully was too nice to be easily disturbed.
Well, it figured it wouldn't be that easy. Yukimura sighed and leaned back, trying to ignore the sleeping boy. Maybe he should simply try and enjoy himself and leave the boy be. But... The onsen was hot. And steamy. If the boy stayed like this, he might suffer a heat stroke. And Yukimura couldn't allow that with a clean conscious. Typical. Disliking having to come in physical contact with people unless he absolutely had to, he settled for the next best thing; he splashed water on the boy, making sure that some of it hit his face.
Scrunching his nose a bit, Echizen slit open his golden eyes to take in his surroundings. Had an extra pocket of hot water jump up to get him? No....there was another person. A senpai if he wasn't mistaken.
"What's your problem?" he grumbled, more sleepy than threatening.
"What's your problem," Yukimura retorted. "Don't you know this is dangerous?"
Echizen shrugged. "I don't sleep very long, and I always wake up if I hit the water," the indignation seeped out of him. Just a misguided senpai and not anyone trying to pick a fight.
"You could get a heat stroke." He moved further away from the boy, scooping up some water in his cupped hands and dousing himself with it. "You're... Echizen, correct? From school?"
A second shrug displayed Echizen's level of caring...which wasn't very high.
"Yeah...." Echizen looked at his senpai to try and remember his name. "You're....Yukiharu-senpai?" he guessed, knowing that it started with yuki.
"Not quite." Yukimura wasn't going to spell it out to the boy if he actually didn't remember. It was a matter of pride, really; most of the students in school knew who he was. If this boy didn't... Well, he just had to sit there and feel stupid about it, didn't he? "You're... Quite the cheeky one, I've heard, boya."
Echizen was a first year, how could he be expected to know everyone already, even the ones he never met?
"Well what's your name then?" he couldn't remember if he was never told. "...Eh? Cheeky?"
Who would spread a weird rumor like that?
"Yes, cheeky." Yukimura smiled pleasantly. "And my name... Why don't you find out for yourself. Or, better yet. Give me a reason to tell you." He looked carefully at him. "Rumor has it you're a levitator, just like your father. But you're not as... Gifted as your father, are you? I thought you were, at first, but..." One eyebrow raised, he didn't take his eyes away from the younger boy. "How come you're not good enough?"
"If you want me to know your name, you should introduce yourself," what a rude senpai. Not that Echizen was a basket of kittens himself. But this guy was trying to push him around, and he would have none of it. "And as for my powers, give me a good reason why it's your business."
Sure, he was in remedial lessons, but he wouldn't let anyone bully him.
"Simply curious. Your father is a bit famous, after all." Yukimura stretched. "Let me say this, boy... You're halfway correct. My name starts with 'Yuki'." He paused, thinking it over for a moment. "Yukimura Seiichi. And usually I don't like it when people ask me what my problem is when I'm trying to help. But I guess I can overlook it, as you were snoozing of like a baby." And maybe he shouldn't aggravate the boy more than necessary; it was bad enough that he couldn't get along with his own roommate.
"Even my father went to school, Yukimura-senpai," Echizen repeated the name. He found that after a few times saying names they would be committed to memory. "And I guess I'm just not a morning person," he smirked a little because it was clearly not morning.
"Some people tend to be grumpy when startled awake," Yukimura admitted. "But... You really shouldn't sleep when you're at an onsen. There are so many minerals in the steam as well. Over exposure could be bad for your health."
"I usually don't sleep very long...maybe 20 minutes or so," he said nonchalantly. "And then I go sit in the lukewarm water for awhile." Echizen looked at Yukimura curiously. "I haven't seen you here before."
"Because I usually don't go here. I... Needed some space today. So, I apologize if I come off as cranky." He splashed himself with some more water, giving a content sigh. "It is nice to come here, though. Every once in a while."
Echizen could understand that; he felt frustrated at school on more than one occasion. "Have you tried the waterfall? It's pretty nice."
"I didn't even know that there was one." Blink.
"Ah, it's around the corner, outside, most people don't see it."
Not in the least bit shy, Echizen stood and grabbed his things. For someone so short, Echizen definitely had nothing to be ashamed about with his wiry, muscled form. "I'll show you where it is. Having the water pound your back is pretty relaxing."
Yukimura, on the other hand, could be quite shy sometimes - or as Fuji had put it when Yukimura hadn't heard it, prude - and he quickly looked away, taking his due time to allow some distance between himself and the boy, before he got up from the water, the towel around his waist at the speed of light. "A--aa. Wait up!"
Echizen stalled a bit for the older boy to catch up. He really didn't care enough about his senpais level of shyness to comment on it.
Without a word, Echizen showed him around the corner of the bamboo fence, where surely enough, there was a small pool with a man made waterfall.
"Ah, it looks so relaxing..." And beautiful, like a painting come to life. Yukimura pressed his hands together over his chest, exhaling slowly.
Did Yukimura plan to meditate in an onsen? That would be weird.
Putting his stuff down, Echizen stepped into the pool to demonstrate, letting the water give him a heavy handed massage. "Just be careful about putting your head in," he warned Yukimura, as he shifted to the side to let the other try.
This time the towel remained around Yukimura's waist, no matter how ridiculous that might seem. He tensed a little as the water hit his back, but he soon got used to the sensation, and he smiled at Echizen. "This isn't bad at all."
"It's an onsen," Echizen said, in a tone that suggested nothing bad could ever be in an onsen. "But yeah, it's nice to take a break under the waterfall after listening to crazy all day," he relaxed against the side of the pool, just relaxing.
Yukimura closed his eyes and relaxed as well, focusing on his breathing, taking long, even breaths deep down in his stomach, trying to find his center. Maybe he wasn't meditating, but he was trying his best to wind down and land. Almost unconsciously, his lips were pulled up in a small, but content, smile.
Closing his eyes, Echizen tucked his cheek against a rock face. Yukimura could take his time under the water while he had a short nap.
After maybe ten minutes, Yukimura felt the need to speak up. "Do you suffer from narcolepsy, boy?"
Echizen creaked an annoyed eye open. This senpai was so rude. “This pool isn’t that hot,” so there was no reason to not fall asleep in it. “And what if I did have narcolepsy, then you’d just sound like an asshole.”
"Maybe I am an asshole." Yukimura smiled blankly. "I've never said I wasn't."
Echizen snorted, more amused than upset. "If it spews crap, probably an asshole."
At least his senpai looked a bit more chilled out.
"Crude." Yukimura quirked an eyebrow at him, but didn't look overly offended. "You're not very well mannered, are you?"
“I don’t think you’re one to talk,” Echizen pointed out with raised brows. “Besides, you’re not actually offended. You just wish you were.”
For some reason, he found himself laughing. It wasn't even all that amusing to begin with, but something about this boy's manners just tugged at something that Yukimura couldn't quite pinpoint. He even stepped out of his private comfort zone in how he acted - something he usually only did when he spent time with Sanada or Niou - and he didn't even like the kid. "Think you have me pinned already, do you?"
“Che,” Echizen tried to look bored, though he truly wasn’t, “You’re the kind of guy that likes to be mysterious, right?”
Echizen rested his chin against the rock and peered up at Yukimura through slit and sleepy golden eyes. He could relate. Sometimes being understood was more frightening than being misunderstood. “It’s okay, I’ll pretend you are.”
"Ah, but I don't like it when people play pretend around me." That tiny bit of information was something he could let slip up. If he was telling the truth, of course. The gaze resting on Ryoma was a challenge, carefully veiled.
“Good thing I don’t care what you think then,” Echizen met that careful look with a know it all, lazy smirk. Sure, he didn’t know Yukimura very well, but it seemed kind of fun to get under his skin.
Not more fun than sleeping though, which his senpai wouldn’t let him do.
"You don't? It's funny, because you sort of come off as someone who do care... If only a little bit."
Echizen raised a brow. It was surprised that someone thought he actually gave a fuck. Most of the time, he really didn’t.
“I don’t really know you. Why would I care what you think?”
"You cared enough to show me the waterfall," Yukimura pointed out calmly.
“...So by your logic, I showed you the waterfall because I wanted you to think that I’m cool?”
Yukimura must know some shitty people, to think that was the only reason people did decent things.
"You didn't, then?" There was no irony in his voice, only mild surprise. "I see."
Echizen replied with a simple shake of his head. “I was being decent. Yanno, for a change, since I’m so cheeky and all,” the little smirk on his face showed that he was just teasing.
And Yukimura found himself giggling. "If you don't change it up, it'll get boring, no?" He paused, entertaining the thought of heading back to the dorm. "I'm glad, though. Thank you."
With a shrug, Echizen said, “Again, was just being decent.” He stood up in the bath and stretched out. “I think I’m gonna head for the sauna. Anyway, you should laugh more. You look a lot less rude that way,” he taunted with a crooked twitch of his mouth. “See ya,” he said in English, as he scuttled off to the warmth of the building.
"I do, do I...?" As he got dressed, the amused smile lingered, and it wasn't until he stepped out in the cold evening air that it slowly melted away. Such an interesting boy...
