Summary: Akaya is sick, Sanada plays the good big brother senpai and comes to take care of him.
Sanada cued his powers up to keep in touch with Akaya as he made a big pot of soup in the senior dorms. He’d dug out his old coat from last year that he hadn’t gotten rid of yet, and found plenty of cold medicine as well. Once the soup was done, he packed it up in a thermal bag to keep it hot and gathered some juice and some dishes as well before picking everything up. It was awkward carrying all of that to the junior dorms, but also necessary. Setting a few items down to open the door, Sanada poked his head inside to make sure Akaya hadn’t left to use the bathroom or something. “Akaya?”
After chasing Mukahi around in that fucking cold and getting snow shoved inside his clothes (only sick and on the edge of death the redhead could outdo him that much, he would take revenge eventually), it took Akaya a while to crawl back to the junior room and didn’t even bothered to change clothes; he was too drained, too hot, too cold and in too much pain to even move so he just dumped himself on top of his bed. He was blissfully starting to pass out when the coughing fit started. He tried gasping for breath and only made the fit worse, starting to lose his energy control.
Hearing the younger boy coughing, Sanada let himself into the room. Akaya’s clothing was wet from the snow, and he wasn’t even under the blankets. Setting the thermal bag on the floor, Sanda pulled Akaya into a sitting position. “We need to get you out of these wet clothes. Which drawer do you keep your pajamas in?”
Now he remembered talking to Sanada-sempai a bit early. Damn stupid redhead. Akaya pointed in the closet general direction since he couldn’t stop coughing. He raged in frustration and coughed some more. He hated sickness and feeling weak.
Going to Akaya’s closet, Sanada pulled out a fresh pair of pajamas and handed them over. “You can still get changed by yourself, right? I am going to go downstairs and make you some lemon and honey tea. Don’t touch the soup until I get back.”
Akaya knew it was rude to glare the other when it was helping him but he couldn’t help it. Of course he could change by himself! Once the coughing fit passed, he stood up to take his cloth-“Woah---“He said in a raspy voice and grabbed his bedpost for support when the dizziness overwhelmed him.
Reaching out to support Akaya for a moment, Sanada waited to leave until the other boy was stable on his feet. Once he felt reasonably sure that Akaya wasn’t going to pass out, he headed down to the junior’s kitchen to heat some tea and bring it back to the room.
Akaya struggled with the buttons but finally made it to put the pajamas on, deadly grateful that Sanada-sempai hadn’t found that damn Rilakkuma kigurumi his sister had sneaked into his bag, probably to embarrass him more than by a mistake. He crawled back into the cover of his bed, curling inside and covering himself completely.
Carefully carrying the teapot upstairs, Sanada let himself back in to see a covered lump on Akaya’s bed. Setting the pot and a mug down on the desk, Sanada pulled everything out of the thermal bag and served up a bowl of soup. Setting that down as well, he stepped over and lightly shook Akaya’s arm. “Akaya, you need to sit up. I have the tea and some soup ready, and I brought you a few water bottles and some medicine too.”
“Dunnwanna” Akaya mumbled curling up some more, sitting up would mean to lower the blankets and he so cold already.
Sanada sighed. “You know I can manhandle you to do it.”
“No need.” Sitting in less than two seconds and still grabbing the blankets up so only his eyes were visible, Akaya glared at his sempai. Why he had to endure such cruel sempai-tachi? He sneezed and the bed shook; some energy-sparks leaving some small burns in the upper blanket. “’Sorry”
“It’s alright. Now, eat the soup while it’s still hot.” Sanada handed the bowl to Akaya before taking a seat on the boy’s desk chair. I brought you my old coat from last year, since I got a growth
spurt in the spring. It might still be a bit too big, but it’s warm.”
Taking the offered bowl and taking a tentative sip, Akaya nodded. “It’s good, thanks” He eyed the coat, it was definitely bigger but I’d do because he didn’t had a clue where his was and trying to think was out of the question with the headache he had. He could swear his brain was inside a blender or something like that. “Thanks for the coat, sempai. If I find Kaidoh cuddling to it, I’m burning it down, though.
“I’m sure he won’t.” Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, Sanada took a good look at his kohai. “Other than the cold, how have you been? I’m sorry I haven’t been spending much time with you this year.”
“Okay, I guess…” Akaya didn’t take another sip to the soup because he wasn’t sure if he could hold it down and instead just held it in his hands, enjoying the heat. “You? Just-without details, please.”
“I’ve been good. I’m getting a kitten soon too, or, well, I already have the kitten. On a trial basis. Since there are a few people here who can speak cat, Kabaji-kun will take her to one of them after a week with me to make sure she likes me.” Sanada smiled a bit as he thought of the little ball of fluff he’d left sleeping on his bed. She had looked so sweet and comfy curled up like that that he didn’t want to wake her to run outside into the cold.
“That’s nice…” Akaya didn’t like kittens or cats, really, he was more of dog person. Sanada-sempai always looked so tough and intimidating that it was hard to place him like a caring tender person for helpless things. He would have thought Sanada would eat the kitten or use it for sparring if he didn’t know better; he was taking care of him when pretty much anyone would be scared of losing a limb to his power control slips, after all. The kitten would be alright. He put the soup in his bedside table before sneezing again. He didn’t want to get burned by soup too, thank you very much. “Shit…” The burn marks were more visible this time.
Sanada winced at the burns on Akaya’s skin. “Do you have any burn cream nearby for those?”
“‘S nothing, happens all the time” He said and pulled the blankets up again, tucking his hands under it. “I’m boring when I’m bored, isn’t it? I can’t grab my games because I can blow them off and I don’t think my teachers will buy the ‘my homework got on fire again excuse. You can leave if you want, sem--” The over talking got him another coughing fit. “ARGH.Hate this.”
Standing, Sanada poured Akaya a cup of tea and handed it to him. “Sip this for a little while, it’ll help.”
“Thanks” Akaya mumbled and took the cup. The tea burned his tongue but it felts nice to his sore throat. He stayed quiet for a moment, hearing his loud breathing since he couldn’t breathe with his nose. It felt nice, being taken care off. “Kaidoh’s lucky” He said out loud without realizing doing it so.
“You think so?” Sanada looked pleasantly surprised by Akaya’s words. Reaching back into the thermal bag, he pulled out a bottle of water and a box of cold medicine. “Once you drink the tea, you can have this, though I wish you had eaten more first.”
Oh fuck. Feeling his cheeks burn, Akaya took another sip of the tea without looking up. He couldn’t blame it to the drugs since Sanada just put them in his nightstand. Fever! He was surely delirious because of it! He reached for the pills, took a handful and shoved it down his throat. “There.”
Handing over the bottle of water, Sanada kicked himself mentally for forgetting to bring a thermometer to find out just how high Akaya’s fever was. “Drink slowly or you’ll make yourself cough more. Do you think you can eat some more soup?”
The second grader shook his head after passing the pills with plenty of water. “I’m not hungry” His throat was so sore he fought back the gag reflex at swallow them, so it was safer to avoid eating for a while. “It was good, though!!” He added quickly.
“Alright, I won’t push it. This time. And you can warm it back up later when you do get hungry. I’m glad you like it though, it’s the only thing I can cook that’s edible.” Sanada relaxed back into the chair as he studied Akaya carefully. “You’ve been doing you power practices more, haven’t you? Last year when you got sick, I remember you sparking a lot more than you are now.”
“If I don’t practice, how am I supposed to kick your ass when it comes to one-on-one like last time?” Akaya said what it was supposed to be a smug smirk but in his deplorable state, it was far from being intimidating. It was far from being in complete control though, more when he sneezed or in the middle of a coughing fit when he’d lose it, but Sanada didn’t need to know that. He did bring the extinguisher, right?
“Good. I’m glad to hear you’re studying right. I’ll expect better next time then.” Chuckling slightly, Sanada made sure he had the extinguisher in the bag with the pot of soup, just in case.
“I’ll show you!” Akaya said sitting up straight and making the blankets to fall; the change of temperature made him sneeze and energy-spark all over. Dammit.
Sanada tensed in his seat as he saw sparks start flying. Waiting to see if any would start a fire, he reached for the extinguisher. “Hey, take it easy! You’re sick, remember?”
The second grader looked frenetically around to see if something had caught on fire with the sparks and was relieved at the sight of the extinguisher on his sempai’s hand; he tried to hide the disappointment and hurt at the same fact though. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. Why he had always to mess up in the most inconvenient times? He grabbed the blankets and curled up underneath them. “Yeah, yeah…I know.”
Sanada reached over to ruffle Akaya’s hair as he put the fire extinguisher away. “Just relax and try to take it easy, ok? You’ll get this. But it’s hard when you’re sick, I understand that. It’s why I avoid the lab so I can’t screw up people’s homework when I get sick.”
“Yeah but you’re harmless…” Akaya mumbled under the blankets. “Unless you’re pissed off, but… what’s the worst that can happen? Typing all over again… and I think those things are haunted or just plain evil...”
Harmless? Really? Shaking his head, Sanada wrapped an arm around the boy he thought of as like a little brother. “I could crash the entire lab, farm the hard drives and make them scrap that won’t even be good for parts. I might not hurt people, but I can cause a lot of destruction with my power still.”
Akaya winced a little at the sensation of the arm around him, because of his body aches but it also felt sort of nice and warm. “I’m sure I can wreck the labs better than you” He smiled, and unconsciously shifted closer to Sanada seeking heat.
“Yeah, I’m sure you could.” Sanada chuckled a bit. “How’s your throat doing? Think you can handle more tea or soup?”
Shaking his head, Akaya closed his eyes. The medication was slowly kicking in and at least now he could breathe without feeling like he was choking but he didn’t want to push his luck. Everything hurt and he didn’t felt like coughing more because his chest hurt and Sanada-sempai was warm and the blankets were warm now too and it felt nice and he was feeling drowsy and….
Looking down at the boy leaning against him, Sanada smiled a bit as he saw Akaya fighting to stay awake. Getting up carefully, he laid the younger man down and tucked him in snugly. “Get some rest, Akaya. I’ll leave everything here. Kaidoh could probably be convinced to reheat the tea and soup later for you.”
Akaya tried to protest at the sudden absence of the warmth he felt moments ago but he was almost already gone when his head finally found that sweet spot on his pillow that it didn’t matter anymore. He did manage a mumbled ‘thank you’ before everything faded to black, though.
Petting the boy’s hair softly, Sanada smiled and made sure that the soup was still safely tucked in the thermal bag before gathering up the coat he’d worn on his way there and leaving.
