Summary: Fuji welcomes his little brother to the Academy with minor mishaps. More like miniscule mishaps, really. I'm sure Yukimura won't mind an extra person, a wolf, and two large cases in the room for the night, right?

The rain drizzled over Fuji’s umbrella as he watched the bus make its painful way up the hill towards the school. As it drew nearer, he spotted the familiar brown head of his younger sibling, bobbing as it wove towards the front of the bus. The source of Yuuta’s difficulties was visible in the occasional flash of a gray and white tail, waving frantically as it flashed around the teenage boy, quite clearly impeding every move he made.

Fuji smiled. Haku was excited. So was he.

Yuuta cursed, struggling with the wolf pup in one arm and his duffel in the other, making his way to the front of the bus. "Will you hold still, you little--"

Haku's thoughts were too chaotic for him to follow, but they centered around Nii-san and happiness and giddy anticipation. It was difficult not to share Haku's sheer relief at the sight of his brother. Being away from home -- their territory -- made Haku irritable and jumpy, which made Yuuta irritable and jumpy. But Shuusuke was theirs and therefore safe, and all was right with the world again. (Yuuta tried not to think too hard about that part of Haku-mentality.)

"Aniki." Haku held back all of the two seconds it took Yuuta to descend the steps, then squirmed hard, prying himself loose. The puppy landed lightly just long enough to launch himself at Shuusuke with a happy squeal of Nii-san!! which went unheard, but made Yuuta wince. "Thanks for coming to pick us up."

Fuji laughed as a ball of furry wolf hit him squarely in the stomach. Staggering back a step at the momentum, he caught Haku in his arms and gave his head a scratch. Fuji had only spent a few days getting to know Haku before he had started back at the Academy, but the wolf puppy had made it quite plain that Fuji was his completely beloved older brother. He also clearly agreed wholeheartedly with Fuji that this was secretly exactly how Yuuta felt too.

“Yuuta,” Fuji looked across the mane of grey and white fur at his actual sibling. “It is good to see you. Are you hungry? I’ve made dinner for us in the senior dorm.”

"Good to see you too," Yuuta admitted, and managed not to blush at the sudden burst of warmth and affection from Haku's direction. Like the mad tail-wagging wasn't enough of a hint? Stupid wolf. "Uh. The wolf says he's happy to see you too." Yuuta cleared his throat, hoping he didn't look as self-conscious as he felt. "And dinner would be great." Yuuta was seventeen and perpetually starving. It wasn't like he'd turn down free food. Haku, still busy licking Shuusuke's face, also perked up at the prospect of food. Come to think of it, didn't the school's guidebook say something about students cooking their own food? "What are we having?"

“I made a beef stir-fry for us,” Fuji told Yuuta. “And beef alone for Haku.” He scratched the wolf’s ears again and started to lead the way back to the school. “Would you like me to carry your suitcase?”

Yuuta shook his head, switching his duffel to the left shoulder, and picked up the suitcase himself. He'd only brought the barest necessities with him; the rest was to be delivered directly to his new dormitory tomorrow. "Nah, I'm good. And stir-fry sounds great." Haku showed no sign of relinquishing his place in Shuusuke's arms anytime soon, so it was a lost cause anyway. Haku's ears perked up at the mention of beef, and Yuuta rolled his eyes at the adoring gaze Haku fixed on his brother, tail still wagging. So much for being a big bad wolf.

Fuji eyed his brother’s face carefully as the heavy duffle settled on his shoulder. “How is your arm?” he asked, leading the way through the courtyard and down the path to the senior dormitory. Pushing open the door with one foot (since his arms were still full of excited wolf puppy), he gestured for Yuuta to go inside. “Kitchen is on your right.”

"It's fine. Much better than the doctor said it'd be." When he was first injured, the doctor had mentioned offhand that while he would regain nearly full range of motion in his left shoulder, he shouldn't expect a complete recovery. If he'd been feeling less sick at that time, he might have been horrified how that would affect his tennis. But his shoulder had become exponentially better in the last two weeks or so. "Ah. Thanks." He slipped in ahead of his brother, turning to the right, to the small but fully equipped kitchen.

It was earlier than the normal dinner time at the school, but it was surprising to find the kitchen completely deserted. For some reason, people had been more reluctant to use the facilities when Fuji was cooking since that incident with Inui juice.

Fuji gently set Haku down on the floor. The pup whined a protest that was not hard to interpret. “It is hard hold you and the food,” Fuji told him. He walked over to the stove where a pan full of ingredients sat ready to be heated through. “Would you like a drink?” Fuji asked Yuuta. “There’s raspberry cordial, milk or water.”

"Raspberry cordial," Yuuta answered automatically, then ducked his head in embarrassment. Yep, at seventeen years of age, Fuji Yuuta still had a sweet tooth, thank you very much. "Uh. Anything's fine." Haku was still doggedly attached at Shuusuke's heel, and Yuuta groaned. "You can keep that stupid wolf, seriously." The wolf in question glared at him, then pointedly ignored him, ears flicking forward in annoyance.

Fuji exchanged a knowing look with the irate pup. “He gets overwhelmed by his own affection.” He then nodded to the table where two places had been set, one with a glass of raspberry cordial already placed beside it.

While the stir-fry heated, Fuji poured the remains of the meat into a bowl and placed it on the floor for Haku. Unlike the stir-fry, the meat was cooked only enough to make it clean and without any seasoning. Shaking the pan containing their own meal, Fuji brought it to the table with a second pot of rice. “Help yourself,” he told Yuuta.

"Ugh," Yuuta said with feeling. His embarrassment was redoubled by the distinct feelings of amusement from the wolf's direction. With a withering look at Haku (who hadn't moved from his spot next to Shuusuke's feet), he sat down and downed the drink before even noticing what it was. Oh. So Shuusuke had anticipated from the start he'd ask for the raspberry cordial. The smell of food made him realize how hungry he was, and Yuuta helped himself to a generous plateful of the stir-fry. "Thanks for the food."

“You’re welcome.” Fuji sat down opposite his brother and helped himself to a smaller portion, smiling as Yuuta tucked into his dinner. He took a forkful himself, sadly laminating the stir-fry’s bland taste. He had done his best to cook to Yuuta’s tastebuds, not his own, which meant the food was as unexciting at a grain of sand in the Sahara Desert. “There’s raspberry pie for later.”

Yuuta was digging in with relish, and had to remember to swallow before talking. "Oh God. What did Aneki do, post you a year's worth of baked goods?" Yumiko must had been baking enough to feed an army if she sent over so many goodies. There was still a box of pastries she'd packed for him for the road, too. But the thought of raspberry pie made him happy, and Yuuta turned his attention back to inhaling his food. Under the table, Haku was a fuzzy ball of contentment as he devoured the pieces of meat Shuusuke prepared for him. (For all his initial complaints, the wolf seemed to adjust to human food just fine.) Yuuta paused only briefly to take a sip of the raspberry cordial, and...was it just him, or was there an odd aftertaste in his mouth? Like a warm tingling sensation buzzing along his tongue. Frowning, Yuuta took another bite.

“She’s been worried about you Yuuta. We all have.” Fuji’s eyes strayed back to Yuuta’s shoulder. In truth, Yumiko’s obsessive baking spree had been as much to calm Fuji as it had been to reassure Yuuta. She had been fielding Fuji’s demand for almost hourly updates for the last couple of weeks since Fuji had left home. They both knew that while Yuuta was still eating raspberry tarts, there was hope. Therefore he was going to be forced to prove his health by eating himself into an early grave.

“Have you seen a map of the school?” Fuji pushed his finished plate aside and tapped the wood of the tabletop with one finger. Beneath its tip, inky lines started to spread, showing first their location in the senior dormitory and then stretching out down to the bus stop and up to the school. At the bus stop location, an illusion of Yuuta hugged his brother enthusiastically as he stepped off the vehicle. It hadn’t happened exactly like that, but Fuji was sure it was close enough. In another part of the image, a dark haired boy wearing a purple shirt tripped down a flight of stairs as he tried to catch up with Fuji and Yuuta. “The junior dormitory is here,” Fuji gestured with his free hand. “We’ll go there after you have finished eating. And the classrooms are here.”

The way Shuusuke looked at him made him feel all of seven instead of seventeen, and Yuuta shifted in his seat, avoiding Shuusuke's eyes. "Yeah. Um." There was a faint burning sensation in his throat. Yuuta reached for his drink again. "Sorry."

The...accident wasn't something he liked remembering. He remembered the agony in his left shoulder as he caught himself on the edge of the cliff, the sensation of his insides plunging as he fell, and the bone-chilling certainty he was going to die. And he didn't want to die. The thought was like a desperate, terrified scream in his head, and then -- nothing.

Yuuta felt soft fur on his ankle, and blinked. Haku didn't look at him, but the small body remained pressed to the side of Yuuta's leg, warm and reassuring. There were echoes of remembered sensations and emotions that briefly reverberated between them before subsiding. A quick, calming breath, and Yuuta looked down at what his brother was showing him.

And goggled. "ANIKI, that is NOT what happened." And was that -- he was sure he'd recognized the one in purple shirt, the one who tripped. "Seriously. Do you ever remember anything the way it really happened?"

“Somethings.” For a moment, Fuji caught Yuuta’s eyes with his own blue ones, which appeared over-bright in the soft kitchen lights. Then he smiled and the colour disappeared behind moon-shaped crescents. He stood, the illusion fading as he went to the fridge and took out a pie. “Would you like your piece cold or hot?”

"Either. No, wait. Cold." His throat was still kind of burning. In fact, his entire mouth was on fire. And he really didn't think it was choked up feelings. "...Aniki. What did you--"

Yuuta didn't finish the sentence, frantically reaching for his glass -- empty, damn it -- and then fumbling for Shuusuke's and draining whatever was inside.

Fuji watches as Yuuta lunged for his glass. He was pleased at his brother’s speed; Yuuta must be feeling a lot better. There was only one possible problem....

“That’s one of my friend’s mixes,” Fuji told Yuuta, as he cut a large slab of pie and put it on a plate. “His name is Inui.”

"Inu--" The aftertaste assailed him like a tsunami, and the tabletop rushed to meet his face. Yuuta thought he might have groaned, though it probably came out more like a strangled squeak. The rest of whatever he tried to say was lost amidst the incoherent, gurgling noises.

Haku, looking taken aback, leaped on the chair and then to the table, examining Yuuta with what appeared to be exasperated concern. Then, a queasy look crossed the puppy's face, and he sat down meekly, looking up at Shuusuke piteously.

Fuji looked at the glass in mild surprise. That was only the ‘seabreeze smoothie’ Inui drink. It barely had any zang. He cleared away the plates and then placed the large slice of pie right by Haku’s nose.

There was something life-giving nearby. Something sweet. Yuuta's mind made a valiant attempt to rouse him, but vertigo hit him as soon as he opened his eyes. "Ughhhhhhh," Yuuta managed, screwing his eyes shut. The light was damn bright, and it kept spinning. Why was the light spinning again?

He could feel Haku's interest piqued by the sweet smell. But Haku's thoughts felt distant and fuzzy, like the ball of fluff he was. The thought made him chuckle, or at least it would have if he wasn't too busy gagging. Yergh, he was never going to get rid of that horrid aftertaste. "Wuzzat?" Yuuta asked, and frowned. His voice sounded funny, far away and sort of muffled.

Yuuta was clearly fine. That was a relief! Fuji looked down at the groggy boy and splashed out wolf on the table and then at the two big bags on the kitchen floor. “Why don’t you stay here tonight, Yuuta?” he suggested.

The words "stay" and "here" made through his foggy thoughts. "Nnnngh," Yuuta managed in reply. Shuusuke was with him and Haku was feeling annoyed but calm, so all was well. Actually it was hard and cold under his face, but otherwise, here was fine. "'S'kay."

Fuji was going to take that as a ‘yes’. In all honestly, it was more positive than most answers he extracted from Yuuta, even regarding raspberry tart. Putting the remaining food back in the refrigerator, he considered the task of getting the boy, wolf and bags upstairs. He was likely to need some assistance. Blue eyes slid to the empty container of Inui juice.

Inui left Yuuta tucked up in Fuji’s bed, as Fuji held the dopey pup in his own arms. “Thank you, Inui,” Fuji said to his friend as he left.

Yukimura had not yet returned for the night, but Fuji could hardly see how he would object to one extra person, a wolf and two large cases extra in their room tonight. Helpfully, he stuck a notice to the outside of the door ‘beware of the wolf’ and then walked over to his own bed and settled in behind his brother.

Soft bed. Mm, springy. Sheets were cool and smelled nice. Wait, that was the wolf, not him. Yuuta was still feeling faint and his stomach hurt, but he was pretty sure it was Haku who was sniffing around and trying to decide whether they were safe here. Familiar scent? Safe. Right. The wolf's thoughts were a bit sluggish, like when he was really tired. Yuuta felt the warm, furry lump settle somewhere close, and decided anything involving functional brain cells could wait until the room stopped spinning.

Yuuta was still dimly aware of Shuusuke -- it was kind of impossible not to be aware of Shuusuke these days, what with Haku being so attuned to his brother's presence -- slipping into bed behind him. A part of his mind tried to pipe up, something about this being Embarrassing and therefore Not Acceptable, but mostly, he felt comforted. Haku's sleepy thoughts curled around his, warm and familiar, augmenting the feelings of safety and contentment. With a mumbled, "G'night," Yuuta gratefully succumbed to sleep.

Fuji gently ran his fingers through his brother’s short brown hair. “Goodnight, Yuuta.” He watched his brother’s sleeping face as night settled in properly. Things would be better for his brother now he was at the Academy, Fuji was sure of it. Fuji would make sure of it.
