Summary: Kitten neutering :D
Inui checked his watch as he stood at the bus stop, waiting for the others to arrive. Pi stewed in the pet carrier at his feet, meowing plaintively, as if aware of his impending fate. Inui was meeting with the other owners of this particular family of kittens for a visit to the vet, where the kittens would receive a check up...and be neutered.
Carrying the cardboard pet carrier in his arms, Sanada wandered down to the bus stop. Yuki was crying and whining the whole way, though he wasn’t sure if she was protesting the cold or the trip. Soothing her as best he could, he nodded at Inui before coming to a stop next to the thin teen. Looking down at Pi’s carrier, he felt a jolt of concern. Was the little guy warm enough so close to the ground and the snow?
Another boy, with another carrier. Usually, the huge, silent second year would be toting his kitten in his pocket, but not today. Niko might run off. Niko didn’t like the word vet for some reason. He looked from Sanada to Inui and to the two kittens in their respective carriers. One more and the family would be all together again. It was nice. He nodded towards the the owners and remained standing, using his body as a sort of windblock for his own cat.
Ryou landed nearby and walked up. Unlike the others, he wasn’t holding a carrier. Instead, Victor was wearing a harness and was sitting on his shoulder. Why don’t you move inside my jacket where it is warmer? Ryou suggested. He’d taken the time to explain to Victor what they were going to do and why, making the little kitten a bit apprehensive, but not too nervous. “Hey, everyone.” He looked around at his friend’s faces. “From looking at you I’m not sure which is getting the procedure, you or the kittens!”
Victor meowed at his siblings from his spot on the Big Kitty’s shoulder. Hi. Oh, you all have little houses. That’s cool. ...why is Yuki crying? Did Pi bite her tail?
“Yo,” Inui greeted the others and hoisted the carrier into his arms so Pi could see his siblings. Inside, a pair of huge yellow eyes stared out from a cocoon of blankets and warmers. As the view outside the carrier changed, one furry black ear followed, then another. At least the tragic meowing had stopped for the time being. “Oh, the harness is a good idea,” said Inui, slightly envious. Being able to explain things to cats had its advantages.
Inside the cardboard carrier, Yuki huddled under her blankets and cried more, not wanting to go to the vet at all. She didn’t know what to expect, but going there had yet to be fun. It smelled weird and it was loud, and her cold human wasn’t there.
Trying to hold the carton as close to himself as he could, Sanada did his best to sooth his little girl. “Shh, it’s alright, Yuki. You’re gonna be fine, I promise.”
Kabaji smiled a little. Maybe he should have had Ryou explain it to Niko too. Because he didn’t like using the carrier. He prefered the cat in his pocket. Niko preferred his pocket too. He kept finding the kitten in there every time he was going to grab his coat to go out. Always with the little kitten look that said, ‘nope...not going anywhere without great and fabulous me!’. He looked at Ryou again and murmured. “I...just want Niko...to be safe.”
Inside the carrier, a little paw stuck through, grey and striped. “I like the pocket better. It has food. And Yuki is a scaredy-cat. Vets are scary but I can handle it!” False kitty bravado exuded from the carrier.
“I’m sure you can, Niko,” Ryou said, encouragingly. “Just a minor operation for you boys today to help you live longer, healthier lives. Yuki...” He bent over to look into the cardboard carrier. “Is there anything I can do to help you not be so upset, sweetie?” he asked her. Looking up at Sanada first, then the others, he said, “If there is anything you want to ask or make sure they know, feel free to ask me.”
“I don’t understand why I have to go! I’m healthy, I’m good and I don’t eat weird things. Is Daddy mad at me?” Yuki whined pitifully from inside the cardboard. All she wanted to do was go snuggle with her other human and have a bath and a nap.
“I just want her to know that it’s ok and that she’s gonna be fine. I just don’t want to have to worry about her running into feral cats from town anytime she goes into heat.” Sighing softly, Sanada adjusted his grip on the carrier. He hated that Yuki sounded so upset, but he didn’t know what else to do for her.
Once again, Inui found himself wondering what the kitten conversation was about. He’d opted for the ‘ignorance is bliss’ option with Pi, chasing him into the carrier only at the very last moment. Pi was thus very confused and had no idea where he was going, only that it was cold despite the blankets and heating pad. The black kitten pressed his face against the door of the carrier, eyes growing larger and larger as he listened to the back and forth between his siblings.
At times like this, Kabaji wished that he had the ability to speak with animals. He was really really glad that Ryou was there. He was also glad that his own cat didn’t seem as distressed. Then again, as long as he gave his little diva the attention he demanded when he demanded it, it all seemed fine. In fact, he wondered if it would be okay to take him out and put him where it was most comfortable. He didn’t, because the kibble would get eaten and he was certain that with the little treatment his boy was about to undergo, feeding him was a no no.
“Maybe....I should have brought...more treats...” Because Kabaji had packed some kitten treats for after the deed was done. Mostly so he could show Niko that he still loved him, even after he became an it.
After exchanging a glance with Sanada, Ryou reached into the cardboard carton and pulled Yuki out, giving her a snuggle. “He’s not mad at you, sweetheart. None of your humans are,” he assured the boys, too. “But you are getting close to growing up and you need to go in so that we can make sure you all live long and happy lives, not having to fight off unwanted attention from other cats, that sort of thing. We love and care for you and want you to be with us for as long as possible,” Ryou told the kittens. “This is going to be scary, yes. They’re going to give you a shot that will make you sleep and when you wake up your private parts are going to be sore and itchy. But we will then lavish you with treats and there might even be catnip,” he added with a smile. He continued to pet and snuggle Yuki. Her surgery would be the most invasive, after all. “I brought some treats as well, Kabaji-kun,” he said in Japanese.
“You promise? And why will I be itchy there? I give myself a bath lots! I’m not dirty and I don’t want to sleep there! It’s smelly and loud and there are too many other cats and dogs yelling. Can’t I just stay here and stay inside all the time?” Yuki continued her crying as she pawed Ryou’s chin. She really didn’t understand how her brothers could be so laid back about all of this.
Sanada’s face looked pinched as his little girl kept on crying at his friend. “I don’t know how to make her understand that I’m doing this because I love her. She probably thinks that I hate her, doesn’t she.”
Inui winced as Pi finally cued in on what was going on and started adding his own protests to the clamour of cries and meows. “Oh shh, cat! Um...maybe we should go? We’ll be late to the appointment,” he suggested awkwardly as the unhappy PI hissed back at him. They couldn’t just be standing around trying to placate the cats forever, even if he did feel bad for Sanada’s kitten’s obvious distress.
Kabaji nodded. He wished that he could do more. But all he could do was wait for the bus and give his kitten the attention he deserved and always seemed so desperate to have. He sighed in relief when the transport actually came for them. Only then did he move, shifting over to Ryou to whisper softly, “The animals...at the shelter...will they be...okay with you like these four are?”
“No,” Ryou said, not wanting to beat around the bush. “To be honest, I was planning on staying outside, so that I did not freak out any of the other pets that will be there. But...if I do go in, then at least the other cats and dogs who yell and bother little kittens,” his fingers continued to stroke Yuki-neko’s ears, “will be quiet.” He sighed as they all got onto the bus. “On the other hand, I would feel a bit guilty as the staff will have to clean up all that submission piddling. Perhaps if I just cuddle each kitten a bit before they go in? That should get the other animals to back off from them, at least; smelling like me.” He sat down in a seat and arranged Vector and Yuki comfortably.
Yuki settled on Ryou’s lap, still whining softly. “Do I still have to go? I can be a good girl and stay inside. I wanna go back and nap with my cold person.”
Kabaji nodded to Ryou. “If you stay out...I’ll watch Victor ...for you ….until you can be with him again.” He found himself a seat and quietly sat, opening the carrier so he could reach inside to pet his feline, who seemed more at ease once he got attention.
Inui tried to follow suit, reaching inside the carrier to try and soothe his agitated cat. Pi would have none of it, however, and Inui ended up with bitten fingers for his trouble. He sighed. At least the bus journey would be short. “I don’t foresee any complications,” he said to his schoolmates. “The cats will be fine once they realise it’s not as bad as they think, I hope.”
“I hope you’re right, Inui. But then, the boys will have an easier time of it.” Sanada couldn’t help feeling like Yuki was going to hate him for doing this to her, but it had to be done. For her own health, he had to be the mean human and take her to do this.
Ryou cuddled the two kittens he was holding. “Yes, you still have to go. It isn’t just staying inside, sweetheart. It’s also about being horribly unhappy for about a month every year, having males panting after you without you being able to tell them no, and then ending up with kittens. Every year for the rest of your life. Instead, Sanada and your cold person want you to be healthy, happy, unmolested and with them for a long time. And you can’t even blame the boys, they don’t have any more control over the panting than you would,” he added, stroking her fur gently.
He smiled gently at the other kittens. “The plus side of this is that you will get major guilt pettings and gooshy food for a few days. Feel free to lick pathetically at yourself and give them big sad eyes.”
